Got a pic of the area? From you description, I am not sure if the top isn't properly attached to the frame, or if the weather stripping is missing.

Looks to me like the top has shrunk, and possible pulled loose from where it connects to the framing. Mine has a similar problem and so will be getting a new top this spring.

There is no place for the top to connect to the framing...

I apologize, I didn't explain that quite right. I was referring to the spot at the side window where the top connects. On my car, this has torn loose, allowing the top to pull out and exacerbate the gap as seen on your car.

let me chime in. the problem your having is similar to mines, from what I saw the space is small,,,,,,,,,,mines has a gap from the same point to about 75 percent around the trunk area just to about the latch.....I took I took it to auto upolstry shop and was told that who ever put the top on, put it on too tight and didnt allow for it to shrink,, once it did shrink it bent the bow portion of the frame, pulled it upward to the point that I have a lift or space on the sides. now he told me that I need a new bow for the frame thats bent, I havent seen that on the parts list........so I guess that I'm kind of stuck... plus the top wasnt good of quality

I know this post is kind of old but I havent been around to much lately. Just wanted to say that my 87 has the exact same problem and I know the person who owned it before me always kept the car meticulously maintened. So I would have to say its just a problem as our cars age, nothing defective or broken about it.
