Late in the 1986 build, a few months prior to the end of the Capri (and thusly the end of the Capri - based ascMcLarens) and as the Spring Selling Season was nearing (we are talking of February, 1986) ascMcLaren found they had alot of the coupe's STANDARD ground effects "leftover" as well as the same items that were fitted to the 1986 (only) Convertibles when ordered with the optional (on the 'Verts) "Performance Decor Package". This being the front under bumper air dam; the side ground effect skirting, the rear under bumper defuser and the lexon plastic smoked headlight & taillight covers.
So...they sent out a Memo to all ascMcLaren dealers with a VERY attractive offer. IF they ordered three (3) 1986 ascMcLaren SC 2-Seat Roadsters, WITH the 3.8 Six Cylinder and the mandatory 4-Speed Automatic Transmission in either "Paris Blue Metallic" OR in Sterling Silver Metallic, the car's window sticker from ascMcLaren would show the $3,350.00 additional MSRLP for the "Performance Decor Package" ~ ~ HOWEVER on the dealer's INVOICE from ascMcLaren it would show "N/C' ~ meaning No Charge ! Translation being the selling dealer stood to make alot more profit on this car than on another ascMcLaren.
Furthermore, with the 6-Cyl. / Automatic combo, it would be more affordable and also more attractive to young females !
The Paris Blue examples had the Regatta Blue Interior and the Atlantic Blue Roof, while the Sterling Silver examples had the Dark Charcoal Interior and the Black Roof.
According to text, the $1,650.00 RECARO Seating was actually available on these "Spring Specials" and I have actually seen onw (1) ! (A Silver Version).
I do not know how many of these were actually made. Sadly, my 1986 ascMcLaren VIN listing, ONLY has the last 6 numbers of the VIN. Had they printed out the entire VIN I would know, as the engine digit would be the digit used for a 6-Cyl. ALL coupes were the 302 V-8 - so, it would be easy to figure out how many of these Convertible Spring Specials would have been made.
A good quess would be under 30.
My selling dealer ordered & got a Silver one with the Recaros and then added the COUPE's entire bodyside, and lower ground effect's striping from the COUPE, in black. It looked terrific! The black matched the roof & Interior. He then removed the silver mesh BBS-style rims and painted the mesh part black, leaving the rim silver and the center disc silver, with the ascMcLaren logo in silver on a black background, as supplied by ASC. _________________ Sandy passed away in 2012.
