1991 ascMcLaren car Production Notes
Author: Sandy Block

As of February 1990, the combination of interior, exterior and top colors had been decided. These had decidedly been scaled back due to a drop in sales and the reduction of interior color options from Ford in their base color scheme. Sand Beige was dropped by FoMoCo for 1990, therefore likewise for ascMcLaren. For '91 they wanted to keep ordering possibilities down, to cut down on complexity of outsourced asc/McLaren specific interior bits & pieces, thusly Oxford White or Ebony Black went pretty much with everything

Each of the 1991 colors was to be available with either a white or a black interior & a white or a black top.
The Atlantic Blue top was to be retained, and used on a Keweenau White car, with Crystal Blue/Dk. Regatta Blue Leather, or a Bimini Blue car with Crystal Blue/Dk. Regatta Blue leather.

The only other planned alteration from 1990 was the mandatory change of wheels to accomodate the "new-for-1991" sixteen inch tires. Said wheel manufacturer and design was yet undecided as of 2/1/'90. As of March 1990, no wheel had been
selected/ordered. A search turned up that the only 16" wheel Ford used in 1991 was for the Mark VII - however, that wheel used a different off-set, and would not fit properly on a 1991 Mustang. There was no other FoMoCo car wheel to use, so it
woulda been interesting to know exactly WHAT wheel asc was intending to use!! (Sadly, we'll never know). Perhaps they had not yet figured it out, when the plug was pulled.

Most of the information is pulled together from scribes and notes from inter-departmental notes as well as management final decisions, and/or management "taking a 2nd look-see" into something". This was being done in the December 1989/January 1990 time frame, for an expected "Job-1" date of somewhere around November of 1990.

The June 1990 termination of the asc/McLaren project appeared to be a rather sudden decision. The "workers" had no idea that ascMcLaren would suddenly pull the plug in May of 1990, while they were actually still building 1990s. The original plan (with Ford) was to run the car out thru final year of the Ford design, 1993. Suddenly it was yanked, 3 years ahead of schedule! The run was to be 1987 - 1993.

In 1988 production was 1,015 units. Subtract 75.7 percent and you'll get a poduction figure for the 247 units built in 1989. Then, subtract 73.7 percent & you'll get the units actually ordered for 1990, or 65. The average of 73.7 and 75.7 is 74.7 percent. If you subtract 74.7% from 1990s 65 units, you'll come up with 16 & 1/2 (or 17) units projected for 1991. YANK.

There was exactly one 1991 Convertible made and exacly one 1991 Coupe made (probably a 1988 car). The Coupe was black, the convertible was bright red. The coupe was UGLY - overburdened with wave-type striping decals. A picture of it is in Mustang Illustrated Sept. 95 pg 32.

The convertible was 100% the same as 1989/1990 but with a new low profile pedestal type spoiler, and new wheels due to the upgrade to 16" rather than 15" wheels. They retained the same style as 1989/1990 BUT were 16". It is up at asc in "THE GARAGE" where they keep prior styling exercises. It has different seats in it. The backs are more curved around the upper torso. It is red with black leather and a black top.
