It was my first car, well sort of (my father had left me a 1967 Maserati Minstrale when he passed in 1981 but it never worked reliably, so I never really drove it), it was the first one that worked, well sort of (if you don't count trim peeling off while driving, transmissions going about ever 10K miles)....still I am a bit sentimental and would love to know where it ended up in the almost 20 years since I saw it. Of course I don't have a VIN number or a production number...but I can narrow it down a great deal with the history.
1987 McLaren
Black exterior
Black top
Gray interior with Recaro Seats (heated, speakers and I think air bladders for lumbar)
Purchased in August of 1987 in Ft. Lauderdale at the Lincoln/Mercury shop on Sunrise Blvd.
Delivered about two weeks later and had issues with its transmission from day one (the dealer delayed delivery as the automatic wouldn't pop out of first gear).
I put about 20K on it over 2 years, and had some of my first um...sexual experiences in it.
I also put in 1 new transmission, replaced some trim when a tire blew out in Georgia (doing 90 at the time, tire pealed off whole and car was missing lug wrench so I did about 60 on rims for a mile to a truck stop).
In the middle of a cross country trip it was about to destroy its second transmission over the 1989 4th of July weekend, so I ended up trading it in at Acura of Omaha toward an 1989 Legend.
Last I saw it was July 5th 1989...in Omaha Nebraska.
From what I can tell, the exterior and interior color lower the possible matches down, and the Recaro seats (which were still working) cut the number down heavily.
That is my story. So, anyone seen my old friend?

Look for a VIN ~ if found I might be able to help.
Jet Black Body with Black Cambria Cloth Roof & Light & Medium Titanium Gray were applied thusly:-
56 in 1987
68 in 1988
14 in 1989
01 in 1990
For a total of 207 similiar units.
With a VIN I might be able to offer more.

Sandy,
I wish I had a VIN to go on. I contacted my family, on the hope that they might still have some of the paperwork filed away, but think it was thrown away in their retirement move, figuring 15 year old info on a car sale didn't make sense to hold onto.
I know it was one of the 56 made in 1987.
Based on other posts I searched in here there were only 39 made that year with the Recaro seats.
And I think the correlation between the color, year and seats dropped it to only a dozen or so possible cars. And really, how many of those made it to Acura of Omaha in 1989. Okay, there was another one we saw parked in the lot of the Holiday Inn we stayed at while selling it but...

PS: My high school had two McLarens in the parking lot, mine and an '86 Capri based one in white that belonged to a friend. Her car was made more unique by the addition of a Mac Truck bulldog hood ornament...her family used to be heavily involved in Waste Management and her uncle still owns the Miami Dolphins, well most of them... |
