vert with air horn package

Post by stangmodifier »

The 86 Vert I recently traded had the air horns all the right factory stuff as far as I could tell and the stock horns were unplugged. It did seem that the compressor maybe didnt produce enough air to really SOUND the horn, it kinda sounded girly or wimpy. I expected 18 wheeler honk the first time I tried it and was very dissapointed. My 85 coupe seems to have all the same parts the 86 vert did but it does sound a little more manly but it could blow louder.

OKAY, I found the answer digging thru some paperwork! The 84 85 & 86 Capri converts, LIKE the Coupes DID GET the air horns. They were AN OPTION in the EuroCoupes, but the price is smeared and I cannot make it out. It's a 2 digit number, is all I can tell. The 87 88 89 & 90 paperwork, make no mention of such horns, either included or optional.......

FYI, on Ponydude's 85 asc vert, the air horns were stuffed way up and under the bumper cover in a very hard to reach space. If a dealer added them I would think they would bolt them in a very easy to access location....I know I would if I was just going to put them in.

Custom Air Horns???

Post by ponydude »

I'm inclined to agree about the wimpy part. I am still working on the compressor. Took it apart and cleaned/lubricated it, now Ican't get the end cap back on. This means I've never heard it with the onboard compressor. However, I tested the horns with my home compressor at 100 PSI. They are LOUD.

All three of my 85's had the horns. They are pretty loud but not deep enough for my taste.

Do the above pictures depict the correct location for the compressor?

Mine was mounted on the lower front portion of the inner fenderwell on the driver's side.

My car has been altered so much, I am not sure what is suppose to be correct, but I would like to at least try and keep some things correct

No.

For 86, the compressor should be mounted up on the passenger side inner fender (near where the starter solenoid would go). For 85 the compressor was mounted on the forward driver side frame rail.

At least that is what I have seen.

The pics posted above are close to the same location as where my horns are located on my '87. I'm inclined to think they came that way on my car from ASC (old Stebel Juniors).

However, if memory serves me correctly, my original compressor isn't located in the same position as the pics.

I am almost positive that that is where the orginals were. First, the old ones i had replaced were very rusted and you could tell they were the orginals because you could see where the road chips hit the horns themselves because their are big chips in them so you know they have been in their a while. Second, the orginal Ford horns were in the same place ASC just unplugged them and installed and plugged the air horns in. You see the drivers side and underneath is smart because it won't get water into the horns.
