Minor progress pics on my McLaren project

Post by BRYAN ROGERS »

I finally got a chance to get some work in on my McLaren.

Just got it to the point where the sealer could be applied. Still plenty of smoothing (and possibly more filling) to be done.

Obviously, this car is a long term project that I rarely get a chance to work on.

Not to be lazy but the pics are here.vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv

I know some of you will not agree with my choice to paint the engine bay the same color as the car instead of leaving it black.

For those who don't. You might not want to see the pics of the interior when it's done either. It will not look anything like the ASC it once was.

Looks good, mine has the engine bay painted to match the car, I think it looks better. What are you doing to the inside? I didn't think there was much you could do to the inside of the 87-93's

I see you live in Temecula, I have family there and in Murietta. Hopefully by January I'll be living back in cali

What are your plans for the car? Ext. Color? Interior? Engine? I smell that it's not gonna be stock. I have come to terms with the fact that possibly only I like stock, so, I'm O.K. with THAT now ~ so I have finaly accepted that others don't like "stock" ~ so what are your plans. I am interested. Nobody has ever attempted it - but I'd love to see a POWER ROOF !

A power roof sounds cool..............

But I have to get to driving this car at some point in my life, so I'll try keep the over engineering to a minimum.

The car will look exactly like the exterior pic that I Photoshopped in my pics. I already have all of the exterior parts except for the front fender extensions and the tail lights.

Due to the price of McLaren tail light covers, I might stick with the extra 93 Cobra tail lights I have in the garage. I'll put them on at first and then stand back and look at them to see whow I truly feel about them.

I have the wheels, 5 lug axles, Baer tracker big brake kit / rear disc kit, 93 Cobra rear bumper cover, and late model ASC lower rocker mouldings (even though I like the 93 Cobra ones better).

The interior is going to be fully custom. However, I want to emphasize that it won't be a big ass speaker box like most custom interiors you see.

Instead, I want to make custom door panels, center console, and dashboard. I really like the interior on the Infiniti G35 Coupes, the new Aston Martins and the new Mustangs.

I will take cues from many of the finer cars available today to make my interior look sharp.

The top will be black.

The seats and interior trim will be black or dark charcoal (I'll still be getting dirty at work) with metal trim work, I'd like to do stainless accents but I'll have to see where I'm going/can go with it first.

I have a 331 stroker motor that will go in there with the original 5 speed trans from my Cobra.

I'm working on mounting a 4.6 A/C pump onto the passenger side of the 5.0 motor where it normally mounts on the 4.6 (smog pump goes bye bye).

The big part of that is, I want to move the A/C box and heater core to the rear storage compartment area. To do that, I'd need to get an A/C-heater unit from a limo (much smaller). If I can do that then I can weld/smooth the firewall to eliminate the A/C & heater holes that are there now. The battery will mount on the other side of the tranny tunnel from the A/C -heater box. Then I'll make a cover that looks similar to the original to cover it all with a flip up door to acces the battery.

I've always felt that the McLaren cars had a great concept.

I just never liked the packaging. Wheels, interior, body mouldings (the late models were fairly good though) I don't care for any of it.

I understand that they only had so much to work with back then, but now I have access to parts from the last 18 years that I can retrofit to the car to make it that much better.

It'll be the McLaren I always wanted, but tailored to my taste.

Hmmmm. how about a Cobra R wing.....................?

Just kidding.

If you have those kind of fabrication skill that is going to be one sweet car, keep us posted please, I'd like to see it.

I have to admit that I don't have all of the skills/time to do everything by myself.

I have a friend named Chris who has been a tremendous help with the engine bay prep and if I'm lucky he'll help out in the interior fabrication dept too.

He's been doing custom stereo's and trick stuff on auto interiors for years. Now he's in Orange County doing mostly high end audio/security install on the big $ cars like Ferrari's and Bentleys.

Lucky for me, he's been a Mustang guy forever. He's the whole reason I started goofing with Stang's in the first place. He had a really bitchin' GT back in the day that I wanted to buy but he wouldn't sell it to me. (I couldn't afford it anyway)

I had to buy my own Mustang. Since then, he has always been there for me with knowledge and experience to guide me through some of the deep tech stuff long before I knew anything about how these cars work.

His parents have always been super cool to me too. I can't tell you how many times my broken down Mustangs have sat either in their garage or driveway waiting for me to come up with the $ or parts to fix it.

Even now, my McLaren is sitting at their house because it's much closer to Chris's house than where I live.

It really pays to have friends with similar interests to share info and a helping hand with. Believe me, I've spent just as much time working on his cars and his brothers car as he's spent working on mine over the years.

I'm really glad there are forums like this now, so I can offer help to those in need of tech support whenever possible like Chris has done for me.

Especially since I can answer tech questions from home while chillin' in my underwear 8)

Bryan, I have long been under the impression that 1989/1990 side ground effects on these cars were identical to 1993 Cobra. R-U sure that they are NOT, as you seem to indicate above ?? I like the rear bumper cover on the red car alot, but I never DISliked the original 1989/1990 McLaren one.
I really wish somebody would do a power top. THAT is the one mod that I'd really like! Other convertible owners laugh at me putting down my roof. Lift here, raise that, fold this under, lower 1/2 way, pivot top bow, push down slowly, fold this & that & tuck under, tilt tonneau forwd and slowly push forward and latch ~ ~ while "they" sit behind the wheel and push a button, and everything I did, happens magically in their car. It's a real bummer.

The McLaren rocker panels run along the bottom and kick up to meet the fender mouldings in front of and behind the doors.

There you have a seam where they meet.

The moulding pieces are part of the 93 Cobra rockers.

The mechanism required to make the top on these cars fold forward, then backward would be heavy and complicated.

It would be cool though....

I'd make a removeable hard top before I tried to motorize the soft top.

I'll Photoshop a later model SL hard top onto mine and post it later.
Then we can all see what a Mc would look like with one :)

You cam see the seam between the roker mouldings and the fender extension mouldings if you look at the Mc pic closely.

Yup. When I look under the hoods of Fox body Mustangs and it always makes me think of the Bonnie and Clyde car riddled with bullet holes.

I see.

Several cars have that power top that folds forward first & then down
and back. Comes to mind the Mercedes SLK & SL, the Saab 9.3 and the pre-2007 Volvo C Class. If you've never seen it work, you are missing a treat.
First the tonneau powers up, then something triggers the back window area to fold forward (toward the driver), then the roof releases from the header, raises up and then lowers, all the while the rear section STAYS forward, and the whole deal lowers into the cavity, and then the tonneau slowly closes like a clam-shell, and secures itself over it. It's so cool to see. I feel like a klutz doing it all by hand.

This is how I am doing mine. The space right under the radio is perfect space for a '92 Taurus dual cup holder that comes out with a push of a button. I believe there may be a push button coin tray too. It wont interfere with the shifter either. I dont care for the other style that connects off of the middle console door.

Nick :)
