My Blue '90 was over $23,500. I paid $20,000 for the Silver 'Vert just 4 years ago, but that was because of its mileage & condition and being indoors every year during October to April from 1990 to 2003.

Ya, I know, I agree, but remember, I'm in the city. Well, not THE city - but you'd have to drive at least 50-70 miles from here to even see a pole barn. One garage is only $75.00 @ month, another is $125.00 @ month. But #3 is $337.05 a month. The 75 & 125 are detached garages in back of residential homes. The have locking doors and that is it.

The 3rd ($337.05 @ month) is a commercial storage facitity. THAT beauty is in a no burn building made of bricks & cement, under 24 hour 7 day @ week 2-man security and hard wired back-up to police. That facility is heated and air conditioned 365 days a year and kept at 65 degrees. It also is dehumified 365 days 24 hours a day. There is INDOOR parking, for you & your arrival car, too. In addition each car has it's own private stall, with vertical sliding aluminum door, on which you supply YOUR own lock, actually up to two locks, if you desire. Your area is 10x20 feet. You cannot wash your car there, but you can wax and/or damp wipe. In another part of the building, there is a lounge, with many vending machines, sofas & couches and fish tanks and music and all where you can socialize with other "Special" car owners. It's all carpeted, and like a big living room in an Estate.
When you arrive, you pull up to a big electronic door, by which is a very similiar looking machine to an ATM at a bank. You enter your code, and the big garage door goes up. You drive in & procede to the Arrival Car area & park. Good in the winter when arrival car is full of snow! In 10 minutes it all slides off and down the floor drains !

You should see some of the cars in there!! The place hold 100 cars in 100 private stalls. I've met a couple of people & seen some outragous cars.

So, it's almost sorta kinda like a mini club atmosphere, and that is why it's $337.05 @ month. It's a bit more than "a Garage" ....
The blue 90 McLaren lives there. The Grey 86 Coupe is in the $75 @ month garage, the Silver Anniversary '90 is in the $125 @ month garage and the Cadillac & Town Car share our house's 2 car garage - my wife's Jeep Cherokee Limited (XJ-THE original small boxy Cherokee) and out son's new Mazda-3 "S" Grand Touring Edition are both out in the driveway. Since we are in a pretty high crime area (first town outta Newark, heading West) the Cherokee wears a brake club & the Mazda wears a brake club and has a factory alarm system. The Mazda has a car cover, but my som refuses to use it  and he washes it by hand every Sat. AM (Inheirited beheavor from ME)

Storage pains

Post by svo413 »

Sandy,

I feel your storage pains. My first home in NJ had a 30x70 foot detached garage and that was nice. My next home in PA, I added a 30x40 pole barn to match the house which also had a 2 car garage. The ex-wife got that. Now in CA, the townhoome had a 2 car carport which I comverted to a 2 car garage. The SVO gets 1 bay and the other is my tools/parts. The McLaren is in the neighbors carport and covered, rented for $65 a month. The wife's 67 Tbird, is at an outdoor storage lot and covered for $65 per month. The daily drivers 02 SuperCrew and 99 Jimmy get parked on the street. Then my dad keeps asking when I'm shipping the 69 Mustang to CA to get it out of his garage in NJ. While not real expensive, but it is crazy what we do for our cars.

The "club" facility for auto storage sounds neat. A while back, I gave some thought to creating such a thing in the northern suburbs of Dallas where I live, figuring that there is a market for that kind of thing. I really think that there is money to be made with such a concept.

Then reality set in (my inherent laziness and lack of ambition) and I quickly gave up on the idea. Oh well.

First off why is your nicest, lowest mileage original owner car in the cheapest garage????????????? lol
Also, can't you get 2 cars in the 10x20 garage?

Here's a video of my garage :(

Sandy,

That commercial storage facility sounds awesome! I've never heard of anything like that. Pretty cool.

I know what you mean about parting with toys, they're hard to give up.

Its amazing how quickly you accumulate car memorabilia, signs, parts, etc. I started with a 20'x40' finished off pole barn, the new place I moved to now has a 30'x40' pole barn. And now, I am already contemplating moving again, with the REQUIREMENT of having a pole barn larger than what I have now.

My brother in law, who I may not catch up with, has a 60'x100' pole barn. I wish........

So what makes each of the buildings shown in that link a pole barn, as opposed to regular old sheds of different sizes? I have seen such buildings thousands of times, but I have never heard someone refer to them as pole barns. Is there another kind of metal barn?

'Ya, that is what I was gonna ask...WTF is a Pole Barn?? The name makes me think of a circus tent, held up with a big center pole.
Regarding the Club. >> It's VERY enjoyable in the winter !!
They have a nice big room, lots of leather chairs and dark panelling and a fireplace and fish acquariums and the Chicken & Noobles soup from the VEND-O-MATIC is excellent. The Hot Chocolate, likewise. No TV, but a music program that they subscribe to. BIG Giant windows to look out at the snow with. They make a fire in the fireplace and sometimes there are marshmellows to roast. No charge. I keep the blue 'Vert there, as it IS a convertible and the place is totally dehumidified, and kept at 65 degrees. I cannot afford to keep the other convertible there too. There is no $$$ break for a 2nd car.
Mike, it's 10 feet w-i-d-e and 20 feet deep. It holds 1 car comfortably with room to walk around, wax, wipe off and easily cover with a car cover. Only 2 VW beetles would fit.
The garage where the Coupe is (the $75.00 @ month one is a great garage. 1st, it's within walking distance of my house. 2nd, the houses owner works from home. He parks his car against the door where mine is inside, so....it cannot be stolen. 3rd, the garage is brandy new, having been built last Summer ! It locks and has no windows. (Secure) and has an alarm. It is ultra clean, & dust free. It is very cold & very hot during those hot & cold months, It wears a car cover, and 3 bed quilts on it. There are no leaks or cracks for mice, as - like I said, it's brand new.
The poorest one, is where the Silver Convert is. It's drafty, cold & has cracks. Door locks, no windows. It's one in a 10 car -- each seperate garage building, behind a house, way way way in the back. There are 10 "Special cars" housed there. I have met only 1 other owner. It's reasonably secure, but drafty. That car wear a Car-Jacket. That is something that you open up, drive onto it, and zip in closed. It's reinforced with tough nylon webbing set into vinyl. The zipper goes all the way around. It's a bitch to put on. My wife helps me, and it takes us about 45 minutes to do it.
All batteries are disconected for all cars.

The Cadillac lives home, and is covered with a car cover & old quilts. Battery is disconected. Next to her, is the Daily Driver, my Towniee.
Out in the drive is the Jeep, affectionately called JEEPERS, which Karen has adopted. As I said Matt lives here and just took delivery of his Mazda-3 "S" GT. It too is in the driveway, next to Jeepers.

Now, do you all want their names ?

Jeepers - The Jeep
Aubie - The Caddy. Aubie, is short for AUBERGINE, the Caddy's paint color
Towniee - The Town Car
Blue~Mac - The 90 Blue Convert
Mazdee - The Mazda
Grey Mac - The Coupe
Hi Ho Scarlet - the Silver 'Vert - (Hi Ho for the Lone Ranger's horse (High Ho SILVER (she is silver) and Scarlet, for her interior = Hi Ho Scarlet.

I think it simply means a "pole" as in the sticks (wood) of the barn itself that form the skeleton of the building, usually 4x6s or 6x6s........

Those would NEVER be allowed where I live. Neighbors would have heart attacts! That last one, the grey & white one with the 3 doors.....that's bigger than our house :D You gotta be way out in the country - here in Nj - to be allowed to erect one of those. I'm more or less, "in the city" (of sorts.....)

Like Sandy, I thought of a circus tent when I first read the term.

Now, is a quonset the same thing as a pole barn?
