I'd have to agree.
For years, I admired the man, and rehashed to many misguided cheby followers the incredible accomplishments he has achieved, especially in his illustrious 60s era. The Cobra, Shelby 350/500s, the daytona coupe......
But I've lost much respect for the man in the 80s, 90s, & 00's. The guy isn't hurting for money. For him to charge for his signature is outlandish. And I don't care if people turn around and "ebay" the item to make money, you can't control that. There are plenty of true fans that just want him to sign "whatever" if they happen to meet him.
I've heard quite a few stories the last few years of different car guys experiences with Carroll very rudely dismissing them for petty reasons. The biggest one is the many mustang owners out there (I'd like to be one) who own a '65-'70 Mustang and create a replica shelby. (AS LONG AS THEY DON'T pass it off as a real one). Most of these if not all of these people almost worship the ground the man walks on, yet he dismisses most of them. Most people cannot afford the ridiculous prices that true shelbies are going for, and besides weren't mustangs claim "personalize it in any way you want" back in the sixties? kind of ironic. Couldn't he just consider the creation of replica shelbies an honor?
Some of the suing he has done has really annoyed me. In fact, its been said that he is responsible for Ford's latest legal naming issues against Mustang parts suppliers and Mustang Monthly. Its ridiculous. Why stop there? Maybe we should all pay a fee just for uttering the word - "Mustang".
Now that I think about it, maybe its time to change my screen-name.

To reverse & Play devil's advocate....
Perhaps in his own little way, maybe a tinge of senality, he has become odsessed with this Children's fund, and wants to milk every last penny to leave to those children. Admirable, for sure, but to those who cannot think beyond the box, (Not I, said the blind man) he is living his dream of taking care of those children. Putting the children first, and how he may appear to others for milking every last dime, putting that 2nd.
Sadly, most fans will not cross ever "t" and dot every "i" to think beyond giving up $25.00 (or more) to obtain his signation. True, on the surface it does look petty.
All I know, is that if it were I - I would not change - but I am a very modest & humble softee kinda person.
His cars have always been too expensive for me, as they are now, and I will never own one, to be sure. Whatever......

I own a real 66 GT350 4 speed Shelby bought it quite a few years ago to enjoy and looks to have been quite a good investment. One problem i deal with is i have to keep an eye out when i drive it believe it or not i have actually had people "TRY" to follow me to see where she sleeps "i do not keep it at my home" kinda sucks that i have to look after it the way i have to but it is worth it i love that beast. I am biased when it comes to the man and his legacy. It would be cool to have him sign my dash but there are so many out there he has singed it is not worth the effort to me to wait in a line to and jack around to get him to sign it much less pay for it things like that i could care less about. I have much respect for him he has done a lot for the Mustang name and Ford. He may have had his issues with Ford and copyright snafu's but with a mega business man it comes with the territory name me one in his position who has not! And Sandy you may be on to something there about his interests on the kids.

You are correct about the absence of the name Cobra on the current cars and may be onto something about it being a legal thing. Since they have been putting the Cobra name on Mustangs until now, it's quite possible that there is a legal thing that prevents Ford from using both names together.ASCMCLRN wrote:BTW I have a funny feeling I am right on this but if you remember when Ford came out with the 20th anniversary and called it the GT350 Shelby sued Ford for using that name. I strongly believe because of this very reason the new Shelby GT is not called the GT350 or even the Hertz model. As if Ford needed another GT having the Ford GT, Shelby GT, and Mustang GT, GT350 would be easier to recognize and truly nostalgic, sigh... Oh another thing, Shelby tried very hard to get the name Cobra from Ford. Maybe someone can help me here. I dont recall seeing the name Cobra anywere on the new Shelby Mustang's. Just the design of a Cobra not the words. Could this be for petty reasons too?
Nick
I have been thinking that Ford is saving the GT350 name for a future "lesser" Shelby version. I hope that is the plan anyway.
But could also be a legal thing as well, that lawsuit does seem familiar.
My wish list for a GT350 would be a naturally aspirated, aluminum block 5.4 with 32 valve heads and six-speed. Visually it would be dressed out like a GT500 except for maybe a different hood or wheels.
A friend of mine just picked up his Shelby GT on Monday. I like the car but the hood scoop looks too "cheap". Especially the way it is fastened on to the hood.
I think that they should have used the same hood that they used on the Hertz version.

I'm with Sandy!!!! It's money the kids probably wouldn't have gotten.

Show me proof of where the money is going. Until then. it is only perception. And we all know what that is.
