Their Black, Dark Blue & Dark Brown are correct colors - the tan is NOT the same as ascMcLaren installed. The BONE vinyl is correct for a 1990 only.

I used EZ-ON tops.

As Sandy eluded to before (or possible not eluded to), they don't fit in back perfectly. Yes, they seal, but the material doesn't quite go down far enough to touch the tonneau cojver. For me - it didn't bother me. When I go to most car shows, my top is down anyway. I only paid a few hundred dollars for it. My install shop said it went on easy, and only charged me something under $200 to install it. Other than that, the material looks fine (at least for me)....

85 McLaren, if you'd take photos of the back and where it doesn't fit like the original, and send those photos to them, they could send them on to the mfgr. of the top and corrections could be made. They probably made the master patern without having seen a car!!

My EZ-ON top fit like a charm. Looks great and it fits perfectly all the way around. Maybe they changed the pattern?

I have spent a decade trying to find out what company made the originals. I can't find it out. As far as I know, Henry Huisman does not know, either! If he does know - he ain't telling. I have never seen a replacement top that I could not tell WAS in fact a replacement top. The sizing and/or shape of the little windows that wrap around is different than original tops OR the stitching is white, rather than color keyed, OR the pattern OF the stitching is all over the place looking like a streeet map of Chicago. You'll note that the replacement top companies all have the black, tan & blue - BUT none of them have the dark brown, nor the claret-wine nor the white ! Why? 'Cause they don't have the dyes for them because they were dyed to ascMcLarens submitted samples !
A replacement top will have 1 or 2 or 3 of the above "ills" (shape of little window; color stitching; pattern of stitching). Sometimes a top will have 2 wrong and lately I've seen pictured 2 cars with all 3 wrong.
The original was unique....and original. The others are copies. There is only 1 original.

Vert Top

Post by 351mclaren »

Thanks Sandy. I think i'm gonna look into getting one from Hank. Sometime he can be a lil expensive but he has definately worked with me over the years. And I think the more you truly love the cars, the better the price...Wink :D I am going to have a time doing the interior in my car do to the discoloration. What is the original leather color? Where can I get a sample from locally? CA

Sounds like you have the same problem that I have with discoloration. We just got a new tan tonneau from Hank and the difference in material color is obvious. I asked Hank about material cost and he said $45 per yard. What he did not say was which material he was talking about. In our 84 vert., there are three different textures of material used. Oh well, that just adds to the adventure. :)
