New here, and have a question

Post by BlownMclaren »

I have an 88, number 622. Recently I was leaning over the center console to get something out of the back, and I heard something snap. I guess I broke one of the support backets on the back portion of the center console. Has anyone ever removed there console, and if so what is the easiest way to do this? I am assuing that there are some plastic brakets, and I will have to fab something up to fix it properly. I mechanically inclined, but I figured I would ask for some advise before I start ripping things out of the car. Thank you for your assistance, and keeping the much underrated Mclarens alive through this board

I have had a total of 4 of them apart. One I replaced the heater core (tuff stuff). One I stripped to the metal floor boards. I know how to get in and out of them. There is a metal bracket under there that holds the console to the floor -- is that what you are talking about? You could have cracked the plastic inside of the console :? It might take me a minute to think about it, when I'm doing it - it is like second nature, but to think about it --- huh...

Open the console lid, there are screws around the outside of the insert - take them out. Pull the insert out. There is a metal bracket under the insert that will have 2 screws (I think) take those out. Unscrew the brake knob and slide it off, take off the cover too.
Open the ashtray. If I remember right there is a screw under it.
There is a few wire connections that you will need to separate. There is a ground under the console insert (attached to the plate I was talking about) and a plug for the lighter. With an 88 you shouldn’t have to worry about the switch in the console. I think there are suppose to be a screw in each side at the front on the bottom - under the plate for the shifter/heater bezel. If you need to take that off, let me know - it is not that hard. I hope this helps. I am going off of memory and not looking at one in front of me, so be careful with it just incase I forgot something- the plastic can break easily. GOOD LUCK.

Oh, and there is a long screw through the back of the console that goes toward the storage bins !!

??? FOR CALI

Cali, you wrote this:--

IF I were to do that, would it open up to my access, to the back end of the emergency brake? I want to re-glue that black rubber piece that the front of the emergency brake lever goess up & down in between the black rubber slit. I need to get "in" there from the back side.

Can you tell me ? :?:

You might have to disconnect the mirror wires once the insert is out (if we are talking about your 90, cause they have extra stuff in the way (if like 89)) cause of hand room. Other than that I can't see where it wouldn't work.

Thanks, Cali. (I assume that you refer to the exterior POWER mirrors, Yes?)
