I know where the Coral Red car is. I don't think I should post such w/out the owner's "okay" ~ The car needs much work. It onviously was UNloved ! :( It can be brought all the way back, should the owner do it.

No on your color explanation. All of the colors used, were indeed availble for ordering, from ASC/McLaren. IF a person wanted a non-offered color, YES, they would make it. One (1) such car was made. The 1989 in British Racing Green (Truimph 1977) with Sand Beige Interior & Tan Top & Gold Pocket wheels and a 360 bumper-body-bumper tape strip in Gold Metallic. (So I was told - I have never eyeballed the car). Car was ordered by a former Ford Dealer, I believe now retired. Car is in Virginia or South Carolina, I 4-forget. I was told it's in showroom shape.

Sea Foam Aquamarine, Coral Red, Summer Tan, and other ultra low production number (or NONE MADE) were "normal" colors that asc offered.
(None was ever ordered in Summer Tan in1989).

Can't believe its surpassing $12K and the reserve isn't met. It will be interesting to see if this thing moves and for how much.

Regardless of its rare color combo, it hasn't grown on me one bit. Each his own, though.

I like it because it's ultra rare. That in iteslf is the attraction to me. I would not want that color on a luxury car, like a Town Car or DTS, but on a sporty convertible, it's do-able. It's purpose was to attract attention, and that I am sure it does.

Well, given 2 facts of the car:

1. its in mint condition
2. its ultra rare with the color combination 1 of 1.

It should pull this kind of money, even though the color ain't for me.....

Sandy, you made the comment that you wouldn't want that color on a luxury car, I'm going to take it a step further and say I'm not sure it "belongs" on a sports/muscle car - Mustang. The color came from the Ford Festiva/Aspire.................sorry, I think thats where it should've stayed. Econobox. Of all the colors in the spectrum to choose from - for example, a green of any kind was not offered for any year (aside from that special order British Racing Green) which is too bad.

ascMcLaren verts are not "muscle cars".

They are supposed to be good looking luxury weekend cruisers and my impression is that they were supposed to compete with the BMW/Mercedes two seaters of their time.

However, I agree, the color is not one for a luxury oriented car. But, I could totally see this color on something like a Miata and maybe that is something the guys at asc thought about since the Miata came out in 1989 and it sold like crazy.

Shelby, did you get the photo of the Coral Red Porsche? I sent it to you 3 days ago. To your e-mail, I think. Check & see & let me know.

Alpine Green Metallic was offered in 1987. One car was made, but it was made after ther last 1987 rolled off the ascMcLaren line, and was originally a black car, that was repainted to Alpine Green. It has grey interior & a black top. I do not have it's VIN nor Dash Plaque number.

Oops, sorry Sandy I should've checked that out before I made the green comment. Thats an interesting story about that 1 '87 that came off the line in Black and was changed to the "offered" Alpine green. On that list of black '87s it was one of those 56 then. Interesting. I'd love to see that car.

And yes, I received the photo of that Porsche in "coral red", not bad actually. (my wife would love that color)

IF IF IF IF ('Ya ll know how THAT goes....)

IF I could have ordered my car to MY spec. - it would been the Coral Red with the Light & Medium Opal Grey Interior (new for '90) and the Claret-Wine roof.

What a fantastic color combo ! The one built had that interior, but they stuck a black 'vert top on it. UGH !

The color in that picture is not 100% perfect. In real life it's a bit sharper & brighter, than that picture represents.

Well, you know what Sandy, I think you should do it.

What do I mean? Well, the past year alone, I've seen quite a few "trashed" McLarens come along for sale for $2K and under. (and I don't mean wrecked or crashed cars, just ones with faded paint, ripped up interior, and bad tops) BUILD ONE since they didn't make it. I recall a really neglected white '90 within the past year, and few really abused red ones. I think your right, that Coral red WOULD look good with a wine colored top that was offered.
