dealer installed A/C

Can anybody tell me why my car look to have a dealer installed A/C compressor kit.

No not the same as any mustang, they usually have a longer but smaller type like a Sanden compressor. This one look more like the Harrisson on a GM, my vette has one very similar. Also look at the hoses, they are secured with a clamp like a radiator hose instead of a crimped fitting that is threaded with inverted flare seal or o-ring sealed. This really look like a dealer installed kit. I have installed kits like this before on cars that came without A/C from the factory. Maybe ASC got the car with no air and they installed it. Also look at the wiring that is just going around the hose with tie-raps, it is not routed like a factory fit.

im not 100% maybe sandy can correct me but ALL ascmclarens came with factory A/C verts and coupes.

As far as I have seen, yes. Now....further explanation. A/C was an OPTION on the 1984-1990 Caprs & Mustangs. It was NOT standard equipment ! However, it was INCLUDED (at a charge) on all D32 cars ordered by ascMcLaren, so in theory, yes, all of the ASCs had Factory A/C when they arrived at the ordering dealership.

Could a waiver be done? I dunno, but I'd assume so. I have never known of one without, however....

That is not a factory AC unit by any streatch.

I wonder how it got one there????

Maybe there have been a mistake from the factory and McLaren just installed it when converting the car. I will try to compare the underdash unit if it is the same as a factory unit.

When I was done at Henry's place in 2005, he had just bought a red 84/85 McLaren from the northeast. I seem to remember NH. He was showing it to me when I pointed out that the car must be a rare one as it did not have factory air (no sign it was ever installed, plus the correct non-air brackets and PS pump). Henry just stopped, looked and said "I never even noticed that. Guess this one's a keeper then."

From the picture, it looks to me like the car has the non air PS pump. When installed in the proper AC bracket, it appears to be laid back too much.

But my car come from South California, I doubt it would have been ordered w/o A/C. And if you look at the pass side engine comp. you can see the dryer is not at the firewall like they should but in front of the shock tower. Anyway I will investigate that a little more.

Ummm...

No 84-86 ascMcLarens were allowed to be ordered past the Mississippi.

Your original owner was not from California.

Umm, I didn't know that. What was the reason for that. Well I bought the car in California and the previous owner too. Why is there so many ASC in California then. Some cars may have been ordered with the help of other dealers. The car is definetly a rust free car, I assume allways been a southern car. I use to work in a LINCOLN dealer and we ordered cars for other Ford dealers that couln't order the lincolns. Will keep you posted with what I find. I may also send more pics of the installation. BTW my car also have a front fender antenna instead of rear mounted rubber one.

Sandy could tell you or you could do a search. Seems like they didn't have any way to distribute cars accross the Mississippi.

What is the DSO on your car? That should tell you where it was originally headed.

I was thinking the same thing. People often think these things were ordered through Ford like the "normal" cars are...

...but its not as simple as that. They often pulled cars out of a big parking lot to be ascMcLarens....and from the way Sandy talks, they were only interested in the exterior and interior color...so I could see where they might pull one without AC and have to add it.
