The Yellow '89 (Check this out Sandy)

All ASC's were hand painted. They came from Ford with a Factory paint job. This means that only the metal shell would have been color coated. It would be real unusual to paint bright yellow over black because of opacity issues though, but not impossible. Overspray is not a real good thing to look for because the cars were undercoated and blacked out after the paint job so overspray is not always visible. How thick is the paint, measured in mils?

True, but I am looking at places where they couldn't really "fix" an overspray issue, IE; in the cracks on the back side of the fuel door, in the crack where the fenders meet the cowl, etc. I don't have a paint thickness gauge, so I can't be sure of the thickness. I still haven't had a chance to pull the sill plates, but when I do I'll let everyone know.

I am not there, so it's difficult for me, but places that I would look for Royal Gold would include:-

Remove interior sill plate, and roll back some carpeting.
Under floor trunk liner in 90 degree corners.
In taillamp cavities (behind taillamp) Tailamp removal necessary.
Underside of Toneau cover.

The backside of the tailamp is a great place.

Then again, ascMcLaren did a really great job of painting, so...
maybe they covered it all up.

I was told by the shop forman that she was Royal Gold and in addition the MASTER listing indicates Royal Gold, too. THAT car was chosen because it was the ONLY interior left that they had that would go with the Yellow paint. It was later in the 1989 model year (like July or so) and there were no more doner cars in stock to be converted. All cars remaining had either blue OR red interiors..... not good with HOT Yellow !! This was the only car that couldbe used. There were none left with Oxford White, or Ebony Black interior and just this one with Opal Grey.

Realizing the job at hand, you probably got a better & more through paint job than all the rest of us.

I would imagine if it was changed from black to gold to yellow they must have done a full detrim and maybe pulled the fenders and doors to make it right seems like it if there is no easy evidence found would like to see some photos when you pull the carpets back and other trim.

Well, the mystery deepens! I was replacing my taillight assemblies (I am keeping the originals nice and safe) and while I was there I did a little more investigatory work. The paint behind the carpeted panel on the passenger's 1/4 was peeling a bit, especially from the fuel filler bulge. I peeled a bit and found no Gold paint, only the black of the factory color...

This is kind of fun... kind of like Indiana Jones and the Royal Gold Paint.

Except no one is trying to kill me so I don't find it. =)

I will be convinced when 2 places are Hot Yellow.....or did they use 1990s Dino Yellow ? #1. Remove interior door sill & lift up carpet at least 10 inches looking for Royal Gold.
#2, in back of the exterior mirror glass and under base of exterior mirror.

I am only going by what was told to me. You do recall the story?

Original buyer, young man with money to burn and from Michigan went personally to ascMcLaren. Late in build year (like July-August of 1989)
ascMcLaren has a handful of leftovers. HE WANTED YELLOW exterior.
But... all but 1 of the leftovers had either Scarlet or Regatta Blue interiors, that would not go with Yellow. Furthermore, there was no yellow used in 1989, so none would been in the paint tanks, unless they had allready filled the tanks with 1990 colors, then Dino Yellow woulda possibly been in the plant.
So, they used the car with the Titanium Grey interior as the only way to go with yellow paint.
The car is listed on the master ascMcLaren listing with your VIN as Royal Gold Metallic with Titanium Interior & Black roof.
I spoke with Michael Huehn of ascMcLaren, he recalled the sale of the car, the buyer, and the transformation from Royal Gold to Yellow but was not sure if Dino Yellow or Hot Yellow was used, since neither was in the paint tanks during the 1989 build months, of October 1988-August 1989.

They may have sprayed more areas when converting it to yellow then they would have for a "normal" paint job.

Door sills it will be, though I expect I will find they sprayed much further in with the yellow.

BTW, it's Hot Yellow.

So, time-frame-wise we are looking at August-Sept 1989, more than likely. I believe they were building 1989s up thru 1st week October. (1989) Ford built about 32,000 1990 Mustangs, prior to asc/McLaren-SPEC car #1 was built.

NO! Just the name chosen! Dino Yellow was actually the same color that Ford used on its 1993 Springtime Limited Edition White or yellow Spring Specials. Ford'S Code is "BZ" and it was called '
"CANARY YELLOW"
The ascMcLaren color of 1987/1988 "HOT Yellow" is very hard to obtain. It's from a European Car & was called OVNI Yellow. CODE SES1H eUROPEAN CAR CALLED "SEAT" OWENED BY VOLKSWAGON AND A PARTNER ??

Believe it or not there is a Yellow Mustang Registry. I know it was mentioned here before as I tried making a funny about the Black and Yellow Mustang Registries getting together. There is a decent amount of information to be had at YMR.

Example:

~ 1984-1987 - No yellow color was in the palette these years!

~ 1988 - Mimosa Yellow (66) was a pale colored yellow offered this year.

~ 1989 - Tropical Yellow (66) was the same as Mimosa Yellow with a different name. Only 126 made in this color!

~ 1990 - Race Yellow (AG) is an option for Mustangs, but no V8's reported to have been created with it. A mystery, even to YMR.

Sorry. I have had exchanges in the past with this group as well as Brad Bowling. They tend to look down at ascMcLarens, and do not consider them "worthwhile" ~ Furthermore they consider them aftermarket.

Now, you will also find that you can't tell them anything. The fact that OUR cars were issued their own build code (D32) ~ the fact that FoMoCo MADE incomplete Mustangs, made to the specs submitted by ASC AND built our cars to those incomplete specs, at the same time that Steve Saleen was buying IN STOCK Mustangs off of dealer's lots to convert at his shop, is lost on them. Head in sand syndrome. They will also always point to the low sales numbers of our cars and the high sales numbers of theirs - - BUT from 1984-1989 we were either ahead of them, or pretty close, but it's a losing battle with that group. Brad has penned several books both on Saleens AND Mustangs. Never a paragraph (even), on our cars.
A 3rd party (a non McLaren owner) once told me he called them "Abortions".

The ascMcLaren had been slated tio run thru the end of the 1993 model run, ending with the redesigned 1984 Mustang, but there were big, and I mean BIG fights between Peter Muscat and those in charge at Ford.
Thusly, they built the orders "on hand" for 1990s & closed up shop.
The car was to be continued thru August of 1993, with bacically new colors and higher prices. There never was a program past 1993.

Only thing that comes up is the "Seat" (I was told, pronounced See-It.)

But, an automotive paint supply house has computers & books and they can obtain mix codes and can make it up for you. You'll need a good place.

I have (somewhere over the rainbow...) among 15 20x20 inch envelopes, packed with asc "stuff" a listing of ALL Sikkens outlets by state. If you need tell me your state and I'll see what I can do for you.

I have a car show, tonight. I feel pretty okay, & am hopefull I can go.
Luckily it's in the center of town that I live in - so, not alot or driving.
Silver Vert is going. I'd like to put down the top - but, my fingers are killing me, especially the "pinkys" - they feel like someone is hammering a nail thru their two joints. (well, 4 nails - 2 each side). I may have top keep top up.

Cannot wait for mid July, when I'll be done with this wretched twisted Chemo.
I am now 98% in total remission, but will have to be on Avastin 2 X @ month, for 2 years.
