New Guy, and my recent 85 ASC purchase...

Post by 19cobra93 »

I recently purchased this 85 ASC out of Pennsylvania. My 6 year old daughter and I flew out and drove it home to Utah this last weekend. This car may look familiar to some of you as it was listed for sale here in your classifieds over the summer.

Overall the car is very nice. There are a few issues I want to correct/change, but I'm happy with it for sure. I've had a lot of cool, rare cars in the past, but this one is my favorite.

For reference:

1985 Capri ASC McLaren Coupe
Blue/orange, 5.0L, 5 speed, sunroof,
power locks, power hatch release.
VIN: 1MEBP79M1FF615843

So far these are the only pictures I have of it since we got back. This is in my garage with my '79 Pace Car.

Is the snroof stock? What is the roof code on the door tag? I am curious to find a factory original sunroof on a 1985 asc Coupe.

Welcome and that is really nice car, in super condition! Yes, the SunRoof on her is the correct one, as far as I can see.

I love it when I can tell a person about their McLaren that they do not know. Okay..... You car is very rare! Extreely rare, I do believe.
Here's how, a little background info is in order....

Ford Motor Company (FoMoCo) likes to make things easy. So, when they are selling a group or a bunch of IDENTICAL units, they assign a FoMoCo type of CODE to the correct build, meaning colors, interiors, options that are included in the build and whatever else..... That way they can enter the model code and then the Build Code into the 'Puter along with the number of units requested, & it's done!

That said, there was a Built Code for the 1984 & 1985 ascMcLaren COUPE.
(Yes, one for the Verts, too). Now then, the CODE for the 1985 COUPE was D32.
You will find that probably under your hood on your built plate.
D32, for the '85, fired off a 5-Speed Stick, Capri RS V-8 with Light & Medium Grey Cloth Interior, Midnight Blue Metallic exterior and Air Conditioning. Stereo DELETE, but with Radio Preporation Package.
There were a few other internals in rthe ascMcLaren Coupe D32 code.
HOWEVER.....
That is how the 150 units for 1985 were built. BUT..........
your car was s Special Order. This car was ordered SOLD! Meaning it was never in a dealer's STOCK !! This car was "OS" meaning ORDERED SOLD....owner waiting !!!

How do I know ???

IT'S A 1985 AND IT HAS FACTORY POWER DOOR LOCKS !
I damn near lost dinner when i saw that. Almost no 1985s had Power Door locks as it was mistakenly omitted from D32 !!! A 1985 WITH Power Door Locks was ordered SOLD and the buyer said "I DEMAND POWER DOOR LOCKS!!

Rare, Special Car. I hope you'll do right by her, keep her stock, clean & not beat the #$% outta her.

Now, do not confuse with the 1986s (as mine is) They enlarged D32 in 1986 to include Power Locks and only T-Tops or Manual Pop-Up Sun Roof were dealer requwsted, and ONLY on SOLD units, with a waiting customer. Inventory units for stock, could not have Sun Roof or T-Tops.

Well...there IS a way to get around that, but I'll keep that to myself.

Ya got a gem there

Ya, Peter, me too ! It looks mint to me. I don't see anything wrong.
Did ya catch the missing stereo ??? Radio DELETE Pkg.
Bet she's got speakers & Antenna

Yes, the sunroof is factory original. When they do
an aftrrmarket one, they are not THAT courteous to install an off to the driver's side
courtesy lamp, to replace the regular one that is lost
to the sun roof.

That there is something even we have never seen.
The suplimentary courtesy light, to replace the lost one/

Many cars get sunroofs or even Troofs added by previous owners. Dealers would add them using factory kits from C&C. They look 100% factory.

The aftermarket sunroofs are easy to spot since they are all different sizes than Ford ones.

I've seen aftermarket sunroofs and this certainly isn't one of them.

Thanks for the information Sandy. Any info I can get on this car is always welcome.

I am planning on leaving it mostly stock... I have to admit though, I am planning on a 5 lug conversion and some 17" wheels. Now, don't get upset, it's easily reversible, and I'm keeping all the stock parts. A Saturday afternoon and she could be all original again.

I was unsure about changing anything, but after spenting a rediculous amount of time cleaning the stock wheels, my mind was made up.

I have a question. Is this the former car of Keith Waltower, in Pa?

Here is mine. She has 700 (exactly) miles on her. She's a 1986, Pwr. Locks & Automatic Trans. with the FoMoCo optional axle ratio, which right now, I forget the numbers. It's pristine, but my underhood insulator pad is original and kinda dirty with some "shreading" - the pad is not mint, but in what I'd call good condition. All else is perfect. She is 99.5% original (Replaced battery with a Motorcraft. No Sun Roof of T-Tops
Correct Alpine 7272 Stereo - original flor mats, like yours, still wrapped in plastic, in hatch area. I did not order it -- it was In stock, waiting for me

Not unless it was prior to '97. I purchased the car from Jeremy Wagner in Allentown, PA. He has owned the car since '97. I don't know the owners names before he owned it. I could probably find out though.

True, but is it dealer installed?

We find a good deal of dealer installed sunroofs and troofs on Mustangs and Capris. ALL SVOs that you see with a TRoof have been dealer installed. They look 100% factory but are not.

No, it's not dealer installed. Roof code "C" right on the door tag.

"Aftermarket" and "dealer installed" is the same. They have to cut a hole in the roof. It's ugly. The sunroof in my ASC is exactly the same as the sunroofs in 8 of the other mustangs I've owned that have all been factory sunroof cars (including my Pace Car which is parked right next to my ASC). The roof skin is moulded for the sunroof. It's not cut into it like the aftermarket/dealer installed ones. I can provide you with pictures of any part of the sunroof if you'd like.

Aftermarket T-roofs are similar to "factory" T-roofs because both methods use cutting right into the original hardtop roof skin. Not the case with factory sunroofs. Factory sunroof cars have specific roof skins installed during the production of the vehicle. As specified in part numbers: FOZZ-6150202-B for non-sunroof, and D9ZZ-6150202-A for removable sunroof.
