The 1982 was THE Mustang Peter Muscat built for his wife to drive to work at FoMoCo. It was hand pounded at Barracuda Enterprises a metal fabrication company. Later it was sold and re-sold and re-sold and finally totalled!

The Pirahna began life as a 1989 McLaren. The conversion was done by that company, now long out of business. For a while I was friendly with the owner, and he sent to me a VHS video tape of the car and plant & such. I forget his name, other than I seem to recall a bitter divorce and him leaving for far away. In total, he told me that they made 8 of these. At least 4 went to the middle east..Saudi Araba. One remained a 2-Door sedan, 1 remained a hatchback, and 6 were the McLaren basis 2-seat roadster. I think he lost alot of $$$$ on the deal. It wasa $35,000 "Mustang" **IN** 1990, when an ascMcLaren could have been bought for $24,000.

Odd pics

The sedan and 1 roadster ended up in a U.S. Customs auction here in Detroit. At the time they were siezed from one of our reputed "Pharmacutical Distribution Agents" here in the city. The really sad part is they were trashed by "someone other than the tow yard". Chuck

Everythings' been changed on it several times.
It's got more ingredients in it than a tossed salad.

82 McLaren prototype and Piranha

Post by cobrajeff »

The black 1982 McLaren prototype and the Piranha were both on display at the Detroit Autorama hot rod show in January of 1991.

There was a blonde in a slinky dress with the Piranha, but she didn't seem to have any in-depth knowledge of the car.

I went back to both displays several times, trying to get more detailed info on the cars. After the show, I did manage to talk to someone about them. I believe it was Ron Cayce, who was a partner in Barracuda Enterprises. I tried a couple times to see them later, but was unable to make the arrangements.

It sounds like Sandy (as usual) has the scoop on the cars.

I also saw the 1983 ASC McLaren Capri roadster prototype at the Detroit Grand Prix Expo in 1982. It was on display there, along with my 1972 DeTomaso Pantera. I saw Heinz Prechter there, too. This was a small show put on in Detroit's Cobo Hall exhibition center, back when the Detroit Grand Prix was run on the city streets of Detroit. Unfortunately, I did not have my camera with me, and did not get any pics of the McLaren or my Pantera on display at that event.

Being in the Detroit area, and working at Ford for 30+ years, I had opportunity to see a number of McLarens over the years - sometimes I had my camera with me, sometimes I didn't. Thought you guys might enjoy some of these pictures.

I too spoke with Ron Cayce, & he was very nice & informative. Sadly, he was going thru some rough marital times and moving and all. He told that 8 were made, 1 2-door sedan notchback, 2 hatchback and 5 'Verts. We spoke again, manyyears later (like 1986 or so, and then I lost track of him.

Awesome find. I find it very interesting that they were able to incorporate not only the SVO lights but also the bi-plane. Pretty wierd indeed.
