Capri/Mustang Pull Down Motor

Post by avmtdan »

Ok I know this one has been beaten to death, but I just can't seem to find the info I am looking for so I apologize if this is a repeat and/or a dumb idea.

By looking at the ascmclaren parts site, the Capri Pull down motor seems to be a stock olds motor, and has the loop on it that the trunk would grab on to and then get pulled down. When it released, the trunk simply let go of the motorized section and the trunk popped up. Does anyone have any pictures of the Capri motors as it is installed in the car, with what the tonneau cover part that grabs or gets grabbed? I am thinking of trying to convert my car to the Capri motor since I cannot find the screw style motor for the mustang without dishing out $300+ bucks. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

check your local salvage yards. I just got one out of a '91 cadillac and the part # was the same as mine in the Mclaren.

Just to be clear - the '91 caddy motor was the same as the Mustang version or the capri version?

I'm in the same boat right now - hunting for the right motor without breaking the bank.

Pull down

There are also replacement plastic housings on ebay as well. IRC, therre are 2 types. One has 4 pins on the plug and the other has 3 pins. In addition there is the black switch which can be bought seperate fron the motor. I have the GM box around someplace. Keep in mind that a 1984 car did not come with a 1991 part. The motor seems to be used for many years.

pulldown motor

Pull your old motor and take it with you shopping. GM used this assembly for years. Lincoln used it also. Just check the part number.

Ok, My top is in the up postion with the motor locked up.....
I can release the tonneau via the switch, which allows me to raise the tonneau about 5", which gives hardly any room to try to remove the pull down motor assembly. ( I know it would come out easy if I could get some kind of reasonable access to the motor - aka if the top was down...)

Help :!:

Yeah, I appreciate the info. really am still looking for a picture of the non-screw type mechanism so I can see how the capris hook up for a possible conversion. I dont have the nut part of the motor that engages the screw, so even if I get a replacement motor drive it won't due me any good since I am missing those pieces.

All of these views and not one person will take a couple of pics of their vert capri motor to help a brother out... I guess I'll have to drink this six pack myself.

I'd take a pic for ya if I had a capri...... I'd PM some of the other people on the site that have capris.

I'm in a similiar situation, I'm looking for help on the mustang version. My top is up, and I can't really get to the motor. Its much easier when the top is down........

I'll see what I can do for a pic this w/e from 86-0001. I may already have one from an 85 that was for sale in KY a couple years ago that I looked at. I check when I get home tonight. Keith

Well thanks ahead of time. Im not sure if you can even interchance between the two, or modify the mustang to accept the capri motor, but for $400 its worth a shot. Those capri motors/olds are a dime a dozen at the local pull a part.

Pic is in my album. It is from an 86 I came across a couple years ago in a used car lot.

It was an odd car - Recaro seats, full sport decor pkg, and head & taillight covers; but standard door panels.

The pics in your album of the motor appears to be of the trunk pull down, I was really looking for the top pull down motor, sorry I wasnt clearer. Thanks for the pic though. Does the capri use the same kind of top pull down motor as the mustang?

That is the top pull down motor

Post by KHummel66 »

There is no trunk pull down motor on a Capri. As far as I know, both the Capri and Mustang only have one pull down motor. Keep in mind that the Capri top pull down works different than the Mustang. It doesn't have the screw type pin on the #5 bow of the top, it has a hooked/notched type pin which is acted upon by a torsion rod activated lever. See this thread...

http://www.ascmclaren.org/phpBB/viewtop ... sc&start=0

I'll have to study it a bit more to be sure, but I believe that the Capri pull down motor actually pulls down the tonneau cover latch and in doing so the torsion rod rotates the top latching lever, simultaneously snugging down the top and the tonneau. Where as with the Mustang, the pull down motor acts directly upon the #5 bow screw pin pulling it down through the tonneau cover. My guess is (someone correct me if I'm wrong, I don't have a Mustang) that also simultaneaously snugs the top and tonneau cover. The two approaches would then be similar in result, but different in method.

Ahhhh I get it now, neat trick. Thanks for the info on this, I will definately have to think about trying to mod it, and the pics that Khummel put in definately make more sense now. Sorry I didn't see that thread before. At least now I have another idea to make this work!
