New 1988 Owner...let the rehab begin!

Post by foraye »

I purchased this car on Saturday 8/21 , for a good price, considering what it is. Car is #1238 /240408

Image

The color of the car is actually Gunmetal Grey Metallic, not Sterling Silver as listed, which would possibly make it a 1 of 1. It should be a 1 of 12 with a black top. Two owners ago had the white top made/installed ( I have receipt). The engine runs well and the Transmission was rebuilt in 8/2003 @ 118300 miles. The can now has approximately 125,555 miles.

What it needs:
Paint and body work. (R/T quarter repair, and sun beaten on hood and deck.
Right side skirt.
Right Taillight cover.
Tonneau lead screw work
Seats
Interior windshield molding
Refurb arm-rest
Various Seals.
Carpet.

The listing is http://southjersey.craigslist.org/cto/1887598262.html with a link to some of his pics.

I've owned a few mustangs all foxes, starting in 1988, when at $26000 the McLarens cost as much as (2) TWO 5.0 LX coupes!. This is the best looking fox convertible with the Saleens coming in second.

Thanks everyone...I've updated my original post with some of my pictures. The first pic was with my phone, which seem to have more color depth.

To date I've only had time to unload the car and park it. I did get new tags and registration on Monday and will get inspection and emissions later today.

Things I've also noticed: the windshield garnish molding needs replacing, along with the LH center rail seal ( the actual bar is off and need to be riveted). The trunk and tonneau release solenoids do not work and seem to have been jerry-rigged here and there.

Its been overcast for the last few days and I didn't want to get caught with the top down! LOL...

Did a few things this weekend...

Changed the rear shocks and quads (completely shot), bolted back in the center rail and seal (was laying in the trunk), reinstalled the steering column trim.

Not much but I'm trying to show restraint.

Also drove it to the "Wheels of Time" Hot Rod car show in Macungie, PA!!

Update:

Post by foraye »

I have a few items in for the body rehab so far. New RH quarter panel skin, New RH skirt and a new exterior windshield trim.

While the current Windshield trim looks ok, I wondered why silicone was used at the trim to cowl intersection. I soon saw That the single trim wraps over the top of the windshield... and not a 2 piece. LOL

I took loaded the car up and took it to the body shop. I'll get some pics up as soon as I can.

Best of luck with her!! She looks beautiful ! I know my
nickname is STOCK-SANDY around here, but...the white
top looks so much better than the black.

BTW, the pin stripe is/was not original. :nono:

I am contemplating changing back to a black top  LOL. The pinstripe is definitely going also.

I was all set to change to 91-93 fenders for larger wheels but decided against it for now. My bodyman is going to start with the quarter panel etc. then I'll make a final call.

I will not keep the seats however...at $1500 for new covers, I'm most likely going with a pair of Corbeau GTS-II in Black leather and Grey Suede and white stitching at ~$1100.

Don't let the body man cut OFF the right rear quarter panel !
He cannot get a new one. That is THE original panel !!
it was cut to the correct spec, while on the car, by a big
computer driven machine at ascMcLaren.\Have him repair the panel ON THE CAR
