Well, I guess, that we all learn a lesson & it proves once again to never say that something is an absolute with FOMOCO.
I sure am happy to hear that the finned ones were stock on early 85 convertibles, because that is what I will go for on mine now.
'Cause I likes 'em.

I would imagine there is a reason for the change. As random as FOMOCO seems, there is usually a reason behind their actions.
I don't doubt for a minute that Ford had a good reason for every deviation they ever made from what was or had been standard.
Certainly GM did the same, in all of their divisions through the years.
It just makes it so hard to determine which part was installed on which vehicle, since there seems to be no absolute.
I just want the non-original chromed Edelbrock covers removed from my convertible.
It now looks as if I have a choice of what to replace them with, as I try to return it to original??
I will take your advice & check the FEP threads to see what has been said on this subject there.

You may want to check out this FEP thread too, if you want a pair of finned covers...

What brand?,
And do you like it?
- I don't think it has a brand as it appears to me to be self-fabbed (based on the number of holes in the hood frame trying to get one side set up). But I'll take a closer look to see if I can ID anything.
- So far I like it - it works well, and it's unique. However, I'm curious to see how well it works once the weight of the bulge hood scoop goes on.
When the weather breaks, I'll try to get some pics of the set up.

So, am I correct in assuming that it was more or less agreed on these forums that as of 11/19/84 the valve covers were changed to the black steel ones along with the other changes made on the 85 AODs at that time?
The shipping date to ASC McLaren on mine is supposedly 11/17/84 according to the auto search data that I have.
That may be too close to Ford's cut-off date to be absolutely certain which covers it may have come with.

Is it supported by just one on the left side?
Please share with us the fender & hood spacing measurements & length of the holder(shock).
That is simply too cool!
Are you going with the big bulge or the later, smaller scoop?

Ron,
There's two struts, one on each side; but the pass. side one is inverted so what appears in the pic is just the chrome inner rod and it's easy to miss.
Measurements will come with pics.
I'm putting on an 81-82 Capri Turbo scoop, which I think would be considered the bigger one. It's just like the one I put on my black 'vert, only it will be blue.

Love It!

Is it alright if I pull that photo of your convertible off & use it as my desktop?

Finally, a couple hour break in the rain. I hope these help...
Here are the hood support struts, drivers and pass. side...

The strut extended length, tip-of-ball to tip-of-ball is 21.75 inches. The outer tube is 11.25 inches tip-of-ball to end; and the exposed portion of the inner shaft is 9.5 inches tip-of-ball to end of outer tube.
The O.D. of the tube is 0.5 inch, and the O.D. of the inner shaft is 0.25 inch.
Even though one strut is inverted, the brackets used on the hood frame are the same; and those on the inner fender rail match each other too.

As you can see from the drivers side hood bracket pic (lots of small screw holes), there were several attempts to get the bracket placement right. The pass. side isn't like this.
The inner fender bracket on the drivers side is 9.25 inches firewall to the ball joint pivot shaft centerline (pass side is 9.125 inches). The hood frame bracket is 23.75 inches from the corner of the hood to the ball joint pivot shaft centerline (pass side is 23.5 inches). I believe the variances in the distances aren't intentional.
There are labels on both struts, only one has any remaining print. It is enough to ID the seller, however, I didn't see any brackets offered in a brief review of the website.

If there is additional info needed/wanted, let me know.
Keith

Very neat. Just hate the thought of the extra holes.
Found this in a magazine
http://www.mrt-direct.com/80c000blk.html
at $90 not to bad, considering the struts run about $20 each
