Windshield Molding - Cracking
Windshield Molding - Cracking
Here is a question that I've had for awhile. The crackings that show up in the upper corners of the moldings, on the 'verts. Dose anyone think they are caused by, A. Cowl Flex, or B.Air getting up under it. Also, I would like to ask,Has anyone installed Sub Frame connectors, under their cars to stop Cowl Flex on the 'verts? Would really Like feed back from you guys. I know there is a wealth of knowledge out there. Thanks Steve
Re: Windshield Molding - Cracking
Exterior molding on my '89 is holding up ok. I didn't do sub-frame connectors but years ago I added a Maximum Motorsports strut tower brace (it bolts to the strongest part of the firewall at the pinch weld, unlike others) and it stiffened the front of the car.
I was thinking about sub-frame connectors, but hate to modify the car that much.

I suspect it's cowl flex, but once they crack air can be a big problem. Make sure it's secure along the top. One day I was on a road trip with mine and all of a sudden air got under it and the whole windshield started shaking violently. It was scary.
I put the Maximum Motorsports strut tower brace on as well, but my molding was cracked at the corners prior to installing it.

Thanks for the feed back info on the cowl problem. I also have been lookin' at the Maxium Motorsports product line. Their stuff looks to be well made and up for the job. Not that my car should get anything less. I should have the life that car has! It dosen't get many miles on it, but it's still my big kid toy. I thank you guys once more for your replys, and input.

I had the same problem with mine. You can't put frame connectors on bc we already have them. A strut tower brace is no good on our cars either bc it very well could start tearing out at the cowl. It is def, "b" air gets under it and lifts it up and starts to flap around 60 mph and higher. It doesn't lift as much with the top up, but when it's down it's bad. I tried butyl tape and it held for awhile but I think I'm gonna go with regular 'vert moldings bc they are 3 piece and are not plastic. Sorry to offend any purists on here but I'd rather have the 3 piece than a cracked up one. IMO
