What Did You Do To Your ascMclaren Today?
After reading "The future of this forum" I thought I would start a thread like this as I have seen on other forums -
Since the beginning of last summer, we have been doing quite a bit of work to our 88, rebuilt engine and transmission - including new radiator, water pump and water pump bolts, starter, fan, fan clutch, transmission cooler w thermostat; new power steering pump and hoses; new top and pull down motor; new heater core, new stereo - door panel rebuild is next.
We did it all ourselves except the actual engine rebuild and a couple trips to the transmission shop.

This week I spent too much money. I bought a nos highway patrol fan clutch.
Found a oil to water cooler on a turbo tbird coupe in the wrecking yard.
Bought nos sap highway patrol hoses for the cooler.
Found a mint 140 1989 speedo in the junk yard( spent 2 hours putting the correct mileage on it
Bought new super white and green less for the dash and hvac
Bought one nos Hella fog lamp lens, one of my was cracked
Found and replaced a couple incorrect screws
Trying to figure out the fix for the factory defect of the fog lights overheating the headlamp circut.
All will be done before the first

Wow-I have to get to work on my '89. Did you put LED's in the dash? I have done the rest of the car but didn't tackle the dash yet. Do you know how many and what part numbers you used?
MY speedo clicks and I was thinking of having it fixed. Is it just easier to put a used dash in (I want to keep the mileage correct like you did).
There is a good diagram on MustangSource that has the update to the headlight wiring.

Thanks for the LED info. Now I can have LEDs ready when I pull the speedo for repair. It is my '89 speedo. I put a new Ford cable in, still clicking in time to the speedo needle.

I thought I might get a break in working on it, so I took it to the gas station and filled it up. It didn't start the first try, the next try produced only a "click". I knew the battery wasn't dead so I checked the terminals, etc...and tried to jump it anyway - just a louder click. So I had it towed home - LLoyd's towing knows me by name - I always assume the worst so I turned the engine over by hand, also thinking if the starter gear was stuck it would release it, and it turns but no release. And the strangest thing - the starter relay (solenoid) clicks but doesn't put current on the starter cable, and if I jumper the battery straight to the starter cable nothing happens. So I'm thinking the wires have come loose from the starter (not wearing work clothes so I didn't get down there to see) and I haven't looked at it further yet, kinda discouraged. But it will run this weekend!
I fixed this by adding two relays, one for low beam and one for high. Regular Bosch automotive relays, all of it compact enough to sit under the plastic cover that hides the starter relay and ignition coil. That keeps the high current out of the switch. The lights were cutting off, and if you turned on the fog lights the whole circuit would shut down - no lights. I haven't yet put a relay in the fog light circuit - I just don't use those yet.Trying to figure out the fix for the factory defect of the fog lights overheating the headlamp circuit.
Yeah, I would pull the starter and while you're in there, replace the cable. The cable to the starter is often a major culprit of slow starting but because it "looks" ok people don't change them. After 20 years, they start to rot from the inside out. The old one on my car looked fine but was a mess when you peeled back the insulation.

Here is a some pictures of my car. I wanted to show the updated pictures but it says they are too big. I don't know how to make them smaller.

I have an NOS top and NOS tonneau waiting to be installed. My goal for 2013 is to get them installed, buy a new air dam (I cracked the old one misjudging a curb in 2012) and have it installed, and get the whole thing painted in 2013.
