Truck load of Capri's

Post by fredzilla »

Not ASC McLaren but, thought some would enjoy this pic.
Some of you may have seen it.
This is a pic from a 83,84 movie called Starman....
This truck rolls into the shot. Must of been on it's way to dealership
somewhere in mid-west.

I was wondering what that was. Also, on the
back of the truck appears to be a Lynx ??
The Capri in the top middle appears to have the light
academy blue metallic paint. I noticed this was at
extra cost ?

Actually, I think that the other Mercury is a Lynx (Mercury's Escort), not a Tracer. The Tracer did not hit the market until the Capri was already dead and gone.

I must respectfully disagree. In 1986, the last year of the Capri (and the Capris featured in that movie were pre-1986), the Tracer had not yet hit the market.

The movie "Starman" was released in 1984, and was likely filmed in 1983 or so.

The car in the photo, which is the squarish two-door Lynx, doesn't even look like the rounded Tracer (which was just a rebadged Mazda, I believe).

Finally, here is some evidence that the Tracer debuted in 1987:

Okay, it's a Lynx. BUT is it a base model, a GS, or a L model? Possibly a rare XR3 ? :?:

Base, GS or L . . . tough call. I don't think that the XR3 came out until a few years later, when the body style changed a little bit and Ford and Mercury went with the cool asymetrical grill for the Ford Escort GT and Mercury Lynx XR3.

In the early years, was there a "sporty" version of the Lynx? Ford first had the Escort SS, which always seemed to be a strange name for a non-Chevy. After a short time, the SS name was axed in favor of GT; probably around the time that the Mustang GT made its reappearance.

There was a Lynx RS up until 1984, no "performance" version in 1985, and then the Lynx XR-3 which came out in mid-year '85 as an 1986 model(some people refer to them as a 1985.5). The Lynx's last year was 1987.
As 75coug stated, the Tracer debuted in 1987 as an 1988 model.

As for the the car in question, at first glance I though it might be an RS model because it appears there is a black spoiler under the front bumper, but after studying the picture more, it looks like it's just a shadow. RS models had a rear spoiler on the hatch that was black and would be noticable if it was there and I don't see a rear spoiler on this car.

Pretty cool picture though, nice catch.
