Is my Mustang a true McLaren?

Post by 93svtme »

I recently acquired a "1987 ASC McLaren Mustang Conv with 26k miles" that has ben stripped of most McLaren toys and am unsure if its a true ASC, It was purchased from northern Illinois and the story I got from the previous owner was that it was in the process of turning into a "Custom" in the 90's when the car fell off a lift on the owner and spent the next decade bouncing from storage unit to unit and parts were "lost" until another McLaren owner in Illinois found and started piecing it together and eventually sold it to a father and son who put it back together as just a 2 seater mustang. As of now its titled as an 87 LX hardtop with 5.0 HO, car has all the braces and is a 2 seater, was a white with blue / black interior (black leather seats now) with black top which needs to be replaced, stock mustang rims / bumpers / sideskirts / seats / radio etc. but it has a more aggressive windshield angle, has a manual soft top with the fiberglass cover, dual exhaust, trunk and top hatch pop button in glove box and handles better than any of my previous Mustangs,

what do you guys think? by the way car runs drives looks decent and I traded a cheap dirtbike for it.

ASC?

It sounds like an ASC McLaren. Check the radiator support for a metal build tag. It should have McLaren or d-32 option listed. I have not looked at an 87 but it should be there.

If the windshield is raked back and the bracing is there, it's an asc.

No one is going to fake that.

I'll have to look for the build tag, I have the car in storage being winter, also does anybody know anyone parting one out or where I can get the bumpers, side skirts and possibly seats? I'd prefer to make it original but if not, whats the thoughts on a restomod McLaren? As original as possible though... Just a last resort

The bumpers are standard mustang GT with ASC inserts. Same for the seats with ASC covers, except if you have the optional Recaros. See Henry in Fl for new parts. eBay has some cars parting out now and then

Just reply to that post/topic. Update the ownership, condition, mileage, etc.

You will notice he first post in that topic has no door tag or body (buck) tag codes entered, so you could type out those codes also. I can decode those tags if you'd like.

There was a guy local to me who was parting out a car. His name was LXJames. He posted here within the last couple months. Check the forum or sale section.
