'85 vert carb?

Post by massrog »

Hi guys, I am starting to sort my new ride out and have found a few issues. Nothing to catastrophic just parts that need replacing. I really would like to replace the replacement carb with the "correct" one with all the proper connections so if anyone could tell me the correct Holley # I'd greatly appreciate it. It also needs new motor mounts and my mechanic would like to know if the verts got different mounts than the coupes. Any help would again be GREATLY appreciated!!
Thanks,

Mounts should be identical.

The carb is a 4180C.

You used to be able to get new ones from Advanced Auto. Looks like Holley no longer offers them. Your best bet may be just a different Holley or get your old one rebuilt.

Or find a 4180c online and get it rebuilt.

I don't even see any on ebay. They may have gotten pretty rare.

Be advised: There is a TRUCK and a CAR 4180C. The Truck variant has TE on the horn and the car version has CA.

Thanks for that Chuck! I was wondering how to differentiate them!

I found one on Ebay 10 miles from me and just had it re-installed after 2nd rebuild (was still on factory adjustments which were way off so rebuilder ground off caps and made adjustments) and what a difference! Now we're working our way through the electrics as we think someone jumped or hooked up a battery backwards and fried quite a few components from the voltage regulator to the taillights.

I just got my backup carb back from an extensive rework at Competition Carbs in Sparks, NV. Goes on tomorrow. Hoping for good things.

Like a whole new car! Cudos to Bob at Comp Carbs in Sparks, NV. Fast, quality service. He upgraded my spare 4180C with the Holley 34-6 Conversion Kit so now i have changeable rear jets. He flow benched it and ran it on a test engine too. With all the other upgrades, I'm now running 18 degrees initial advance (42 all in at 2800) and idling smoothly at 850. One short partial kick and she fires right up and just purrs. Pulls great on acceleration too.

Well.... There's the rub. It's expensive.

The carb was rebuilt, but both bowls had the traditional leaks near the brass float bowl plugs: add $100 for new bowls.

All told, with my rebuilt carb, it was $472--plus round trip shipping of about $95. Add in the $80 or so for the conversion kit I bought on Amazon.

Still, I recommend it. It was flow benched, run on a test engine, set up for my exact subtle mods (GT40 heads, ported intake and headers, 1.72 roller rockers, recurved distributor, and NOS '85 H-pipe) , and required only the most minor of adjustments.

I ran it to 6500RPM yesterday and it was STILL pulling when I backed off.

It's getting a Motorsport Duraspark box with rev limiter next... ;-P

Yeah, I was choking on the price--until I drove it. Yup. Worth it. Highly recommend Bob and installing the Holley conversion kit..
