I do not have the VIN, but I am 95% sure it is the one. I see in one pic the gold dash plaque next to the A/C Vent on the Pass. side. Can't fake that. I have always known that it was in Italy...and this seems to be there.

1981 was the first year for 17 digit, car is listed as a 1980.

Sandy, correct me if I am wrong... Ford actually used 1980 Mustangs to build the cars, but marketed them as 81's (M81), hence the 1980 serial numbers. These first 9 cars were just the initial ones; 250 were supposed to be made but never happened.

That's the story as I've read it in Motor Trend.

Me too, but I never heard the 250 number mentioned.
The Orange color used, "Bittersweet" was not a 1980 color but was new-for-1981, so it was a "pull-ahead" color......

I have that issue too. :D It must be the most collected Mustang cover/issue ever!

IIRC, the 250 figure is in that artical as well.

Hello,
I also saw this auction, but in France we don't know anything about this model.
Is it an interesting model ? And what is the average price for a model like that one in America ?
This one looks cheap but I don't know.
I think it would nice to have it in my garage...

m81 on ebay

Post by m81mclaren »

This car certainly appears legit from the parts on the car to the dash and firewall badges. As Sandy said in the past and I've gathered from other conversations, one car went to Italy, a black one. The vin is the next consecutive to mine so I would guess if things were built in order that this is McLaren Production #4 since mine is #3P. I have a friend going to Italy next month for a wedding. If this does not sell on Ebay I will have him check this all out and give us a detailed report. would sure like to find a pair of recaro's that match, if anyone has a line on them, let me know!

Hey Derrick, Have you made any progress on yours?? I haven't seen it in awhile and would like to include some updated pics in my Fotki album if it's changed any.

m81 on Ebay

Post by m81mclaren »

Oops. My notes show that McLaren Production #4 was an Orange one in SD that then moved back east for sale at a consignment shop and posted on Ebay. It would be good to see if there is a response with the production number.
