Gee Mike, After your break down to fix it. I wonder what I bought for $500. But I can do it all my self. I have spent some monies but nowhere close to your figures. Sure mine will be a driver. But Dan has a good start and could be Driving for a lot less. A Earl paint job and some ground effects and a set of used wheels And he will be a Hit at the shows. I have Never seen a ASC @ the 3 or 4 shows I do every year.

Well, that was for a complete resto. I'm sure he could get by with much MUCH less and that would be what I would do.

To just do the BARE minimum, he needs to pony up at least $1500 to make it look like an ascMcLaren again. Front air dam, side skirts, rear valance, striping kit AND the FAMOUS rear wing. I wonder what happened to the original one?

That $1500 is before bodywork and a repaint...which even if done yourself will cost probably $250 in materials. I'm sure there is muuuuch more to fix to make it into a decent reliable daily driver.

So even if he squeeks $2k to make it look decent again...that difference between $900 and $795 is starting to look pretty darn inconsequential.

Of course...if he gets the "bug"....which is a distinct possibility, $10k later he may be still "restoring" it

It's a rare automatic car...and white too. I am definitely glad to see it getting some interest. What will make every last penny worth while is what you just said...the interest the car gets at shows, on the street, cruising etc. It's worth far in excess of $900 IMHO.

Negusm, originally all I wanted is an Auto-Xer and occasional track day car. Now with "It's a rare automatic car.. and white too"; I feel I may be violating some sacred trust. The picture I have in my head is a white car with blue stripes and blue wheels, the interior would be gutted and caged. Restoration? Probably not, mostly because I don't have the finances.

I just got an e-mail from the seller, seems the throttle cable issue is resolved with a little WD-40. Once the car gets here I will assess what I really have.

Why not the best of both worlds? Many of us have a stock looking set up that has either performance or appearance tweaks to our own liking. Wheels are easy swappable, and maybe you can get some colorforms for blue striping lol jk. Browse the pictures and see what I mean. Check out some of our members excellent sites:

You can mod it and still keep it's appearance fairly stock. Please consider it. Mike Martinelli has a great example of a well modified car that looks extremely stock.

Your car is 1 of 9 automatic car...and probably 1 of 3 or 4 left. Sandy has accounted for, on average, ~35% of the coupes. However, the white cars have nearly ALL vanished for some reason.

It's obvious I think that this car almost vanished as well. The car is missing so many pieces it looks like simply a worn out Capri....if the plaque wasn't still on the dash, maybe it would have been sold as such....and it's origins forgotten.

I always say do what will make you happy...go with your first instinct and mod it. I could never enjoy a car that sits in the garage and never gets driven...but that's just me...Sandy knows I want to get my hands on his 86 and Fry those 20 year old tires...lol

Is your engine bay stock? Nice, clean. I was just notified that a truck has been assigned to pick up my car, shweeet.

If you guys have ideas for mods, lemme know. My four car garage will be one car lighter in a month and hopefylly the Capri will be here before then.

Define stock...lol. Na it's not stock...in the 11 sec vids the car features a 306 with Edelbrock aluminum heads, Crower cam, and the ported Cobra intake along with a 150 shot of nitrous and just about every other bolt-on there is...lol. In the holeshot video (with my dads Lx) and the picture of the engine compartment the car features a 347 stroker with AFR 185 heads...

I have yet to run this combo at the track...

As far as mods...
If the engine is in ok condition you could start with exhaust, pullies and gears. They I'd go with some suspension parts...especially if you want to road race...Maximum Motorsports has some nice stuff...I'd prolly go with their K-member and coil overs along with some coil overs for the rear. Subframe connectors are a must and don't forget to upgrade the brakes...If the motor is shot you can pick up a nice Ford Racing crate engine pretty cheap these days then do the suspension...

Then you could do.................it never ends...lol

We have winters here so if it's bad, I'll pull the motor and ask a bunch of questions next year.

Is it true that stock Capris have the B303 cam?

No. Only the ascMcLaren Capri Coupes have them.

Well, that was exciting!

I sent money to the guy with the Capri, made arrangements for it to be shipped and.... the trucker shows up bright and early Saturday morn and the seller can't get the car started. He called and said he would work on it Monday and to reschedule a ship date. OK.
He just called again. He STILL can't get the car started. Do I want to : (A) cut $350 off the deal and I pickup or arrange pickup of a non-running car; or (B) take $900 refund and walk away?

I countered with $900 refund + $150 deposit I put down on the trucker. He didn't blink and took it. My third party post dated check is in the mail....

I'm out of it, so if any of you guys want a pretty rust free '86 McLaren Capri in Dayton, Ohio for ~$600 I'll give you the guy's number.

I think there may be some schmutz in the fuel line blocking fuel to the engine or the fuel pump is amiss. Too far away to diagnose from here.

If you find something out there I just can't live without, you know where I am.
