Hey there everybody,
I just bought this car. I see Sandy has it listed in his VIN collection. I was just curious how to be sure it is a real asc. It has alot of the right parts but the steering wheel seems wrong unless it came with this wheel because of the cruise control, also it only has a 85MPH speedo, no radar detector cannot tell if it was ever there. It does have the airhorns that look like they have always been there but they are not hooked up and have no idea how they worked, a regular horn works when pushing the horn button. The front bumper cover is also wrong but I read on here about that Detroit theft ring that happened although the owner stated that this car is originally from California and that the guy he bought it from said he hit a parking block and broke the original front air dam. I cannot find any body tags ar stickers with the asc name on them. Did they run all the cars down the line at one time through Fords that were to go to asc?

i do like your car alot i would love to come check it out next time im home... right now im at school in ohio but next time im home might not be for a few weeks

also my 85 has speed control and has the same steering wheel as your car and it is correct i also have the 85 MPH speedo

SimpsASC; I have taken some sort of a vacation from commenting on perople's McLaren, due to the fact that I am too often challenged and have recieved a couple of not very nice off board "remarks" ~

That said, like a fool I will once again enter the trap. It's your decession to believe me - or not to.

Your car is exceptionally nice! I mean that, sincerely. Is it stock-perfect? Answer....."No" ! Close, however. The seats are perfect, the dash is correct, the Tach is aftermarket, and I'd assume that you could tell that by it's mis matched frame rings and how she "sits" in the dash. The remainder of the interior looks stock and in very decent shape. The rear end sports the correct taillamp covers, and I do believe (allthough more difficult to see) likewise the headlight covers.
Your steering wheel is the STOCK steering wheel & this is because the car is equipped with factory speed (cruise) control. The sail panel black-out appear correct, as best I can tell. Likewise, the wheels, rear deck lid spoiler and under rear bumper lower fascia panel.
The front air dam is up for dispute. Several people on here have this type of car and also have the same front spoiler/fog lamp set-up. I do believe that none of them were the original new car owner of their vehicle, so raises "suspect" ~ According to all pictures, all literature, all press pics and all real, in person examples that Sandy has seen and judging by that, and that alone, as well as my own car, bought new with 8 miles....yours is wrong. This can (and I am sure) will be subject of debate for many moons to come.
I'd be convinced that is is correct, *IF* I could find only one ascMcLaren issued picture with your front fascia / air dam/ Fog Lamp set up illustrated.

Thanks for all of your comments. I think everything you said makes sense and matches up with what I was told when I bought it. I love the car. I don't think I would have modified it so much. I have the original short block, valve covers, intake manifold and A/C parts. Just missing the heads, carb, and air cleaner. I work with a guy that has a 85 coupe just like mine completely original bought it off the showroom floor and has 29,000 miles on it. Someday I will go to his house and look it over so I can slowly put mine back to original. Thanks again for the info Sandy, I was hoping you would reply.

#1. If you have original grey trimmed seats and air horns, it is probably very very very likely your car is an asc. Those items simply do not get faked easily.

#2. Look on the radiator support? Do you see a body tag? Do you see a second tag with "mclaren coupe coupe" on it? If you don't have the second tag but have the larger build tag, post the codes. Post the codes from the door tag. The DSO will not be normal for an asc car.

#3. Your car never was originally from CA. I emailed the guy to tell him that a previous owner must have taken it to CA. NO 1985 asc cars (coupes or verts) were sold pasty the Missisissippi for some reason I can't rememeber but Sandy can tell you.

No contract had been formed with shipper(s) or transportation companies, until late late late in the 1985 model run. All 1985 McLarens that I ever located west of the Mississippi were brought there by their owners.

Thanks for all the info. It does have that body tag and it has the original door sticker on it. I will check them this weekend. I am going to ask the guy at work that has the 85 asc blue orange coupe with 29,000 miles on it if he will give me the last six of his VIN so you will have it in your database. Post the DSO codes from the door sticker. That would show where the car was headed.

The owners name is Steve.
It is a blue and orange coupe all original except a port job on the stock heads and a 8.8 differential he has the original 7.5 diff.
He bought the car brand new here in MI.

I do believe that those are spring rate codes. DSO is a 2 digiit code, such as "86"

Sandy the first two are codes relating to springs or suspension or something....nobody is quite sure. The spring codes are on the last line next to the tranny code. on a door tag.

In his list of DSO codes above, only the last one is really a DSO....it is a 6 digit DSO so it is an asc DSO....the first 2 numbers 53 are the destination DSO which is Oakland, CA for Mercury cars. So I was wrong...the car is originally a CA car. Musta have been one of the first.

(BTW Ford has different DSO codes than Mercury...53 being for Ford of Boston, MA)
