NOS 85 coupe, 85/86 vert speaker set.

Post by negusm »

Scored a NOS speaker setup for my asc. First set I have ever seen in all my years of looking.

That speaker grill is not the same as what is in mine. It's too "square" in shape (the cover I mean) Did 85 & 86 coupes have different speakers or just different grills? Mine are Kenwood too.

Sandy, 85s got different speakers than 86s.

You have 6x9 speakers and grills.

My car has 6" round speakers.

Your speakers would never fit in the back hatch of my car since the holes are way too small. The holes are evern smaller than the stock FOMOCO speaker holes.

My thoughts: During 85, asc got their coupes with no speaker cutouts in the back...special from Ford. So asc just used the same 6" round speakers and SQUARE covers as the asc convertibles. They cut round speaker holes and mounted the covers.

In 86, or late 85, Ford probably stopped supplying asc with rear plastic panels with no speaker cutouts. They came with the 5x8 Ford sized speaker cutouts. The 6" round speakers would no longer work so therefore asc had to switch gears and install something larger. Kenwood didn't sell 5x8 speakers so they went with the 6x9 Kenwood speakers and trimmed out the hole a bit.

I have spoken to a few SVO owners who have the "Comp-Prep" package. Ford offered this package to race enthusiasts and those cars did not get an audio system either. The early ones have no cutouts at all in their rear quarter plastic panels. The later ones have speaker covers covering cutouts that have no speakers in them.

I learned something I didn't know.
Good pics, BTW. Your explanation has to be right on.
Cheaper to make 1 panel with speaker hole for all cars, and cover it up with a cover, than make 2 different panels, one punched & one not punched.

I recall years ago, selling Dodge Darts to the gas companies. They wanted NO radios in them. Yet. the top of the dash had all those little holes punched in them. That why today every car comes with at the very least, an AM radio. Cheaper to include it than have 2 different fenders, with & without an antenna hole.

Yep, those are it! Actually you have the more powerful speakers, the 1670's I think. I don't really care about the speakers since the covers are what's most important.

That is a stock Ford speaker setup. Looks like asc missed one. I wonder what is under the covers? If Ford shipped speakers in there or if they are something else.

Then your car probably originally got the ones Sandy has as you have a late 85, right?:
