An ascMcLaren forum for 84-86 Capri and 87-90 Mustang based cars modified by Automotive Speciality Corporation, a Division of American Sunroof Corporation. (no affiliation)
Stumbled onto your forum looking for info on these ASC cars. Hopefully I'll be purchasing this one and become a regular member!
On to the car. Advertised as a 1985 ASC McLaren Coupe with T-tops. Original survivor car in very good shape with 45k miles. Price is $7000. Pics below.
I need help determining what a fair price is for the car and what to look for to make sure it's legit. Guess there isn't much proof for 85's? Where's this "buck tag" I've seen mentioned. Any info or opinions you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
You sure it's an 85? It has the third brake light. That didn't start till 86. Also black and or silver were not color options till 86. In 85 the only colors were blue with orange or white with orange. Need more pics to give you an idea of what it's worth. But 45k miles for $7k is not a bad price for a complete clean car. The buck tag is on the radiator core support. If you look through the grill with a flashlight you should be able to locate the tag close to the driver side headlamp.
My tag
Note the location of a power steering line or maybe it was an a/c line I don't remember.
I was thinking that as well tfs2121 about the T-Tops. That dash surround is different than the ones I have seen in the 86's. That could have been easily changed though.
I'm not sure how it'll work out, but we'll see. The seller didn't advertise his phone number, only email. I've sent him a couple emails and he's replied, but doesn't seem like he's eager to setup an appointment to show the car. He hasn't called me or provided his phone # yet. Hoping he's just busy or something and we can meet up soon.
Here's exactly what his advertisement says. Hoping he has some paperwork to support his story. Either way, it looks like a nice car and I'm interested!
Offered: 1985 ASC McLaren Coupe (Capri-Mustang). In the 1980's Ford had a partnership with American Sunroof Corporation in Cincinnati Ohio, to produce cars based upon and modified from the basic Mustang. This survivor is one of those cars.
Rare Tee Top Coupe model [ NOT A CONVERTIBLE ]. This car was never in snow and seldom in rain. It has the original interior and exterior. The car is a driver, not a 99 point show car, though it could easily be made into a high point car. 5.0, 5 speed T tops, ASC seats, Original ASC wheels, all ASC ground effect trim etc.
I purchased this car in 1990 from the ASC Detroit rep calling on Ford Motor Company during the high times of the 1980's. It was his personal "Drive to official good weather Event's" car, and as such was maintained by ASC and FOMOCO. It has been in storage for all of the time I have owned the car, minus the several hundred hours it was driven in summertime conditions.
This is your chance to recapture the history of the wide-open 80's!
No question looking at the pics, it's an 86. Is this the one that's in Cleveland? If you ever get hold of the guy, and don't buy it, please pass his info on to us. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
