McLaren Body kits on 1982 Mustang 5.0

Post by terrellda »

Were any of the M81 McLaren body kits installed on later 1982 Mustang v8 cars?

Potentially. Very few kits were made but I think some kits were sold to the public.

Those may have been spares or kits for cars never built that got surplused out.

Did the DSO M81 ever happen:

See the dark box...in the link above.

They said it was still going to be a 4cyl turbo base.

Are you asking if the M81 was built? Yes, about 10-12. They were about $25,000 in 1980, a HUGE price tag.

I almost bid on a NICE one that ultimately went for just $35k a few years ago. I got cold feet and almost cried when I saw how little it brought.

Not so long ago there were 7 m81 cars in the Bay Area near me. I only know of one these days.

The kits were a whole different story and I do not believe those are so easily tracked. I guess they could also be confused with some wide body kits which were are even more recently.

Was that the one Dennis Collins sold? He was NOT happy with the selling price of his- it was a gorgeous car.

Yes it was. The thought of writing a $35k check knowing he was $50k in and expected $80k was key motivation.

Problem was, that car was a trailer queen I can't have one. I like to drive 'em!
