Custom Air Horns???

Post by shelbyscarab »

Did all McLarens have "custom air horns" I saw this listed in many of my McLaren literature I have, but I don't know if I have them? What's the story on these??? Why did ASC put "custom" air horns on? I guess the few times I've used my horn, they sound like ordinary horns to me, same as regular mustangs. :?:

Just wonderin'

The air horns were only on the 84 85 & 86 coupes. 'Verts did not get them. They were a part of the McLaren Pkg. on the Coupes.

Thanks for clearing that up Sandy.

There are so many mistakes out there in literature printed about ASC McLaren Capris and Mustangs its ridiculous.

I have a 1987 and a 1988 Sales brochures that list "custom air horns" as standard equipment. ASC couldn't even get it right I guess.

Just out of curiosity, did ASC remove the original horns when they installed the airhorns?

I don't think so because my capri the air horns are basically dead, but the horn still honks like a factory sound.

Would the air horns on my 85 Vert be an add-on? They look like the ones that ASC installed

Possibly. My selling dealer that the Coupe came from, stocked a couple of sets, that theyu ordered directly from ascMcLaren. Some people saw, heard or tried the horn on a coupe, and wnated it on the convertible that they ultimately purchased. So, Wayne Lincoln-Mercury of Wayne, N.J. did it for them !

Sandy, I have seen several 85 verts with the Stebel Junior air horns (same as the coupe).

Ponydude has them on his swamped out 85 vert. And that car was extremely unmolested.

That is why I asked. My 86 vert has the airhorns too. But this car has so many inconsistancies I am not sure if they were added on, or original.

Is the original location on the driver side attached to..... I believe..... the mounting bolts for the front turn signal light?

If memory serves me correct this is where mine are mounted.

Don't know, then. All of the Verts that were on the lot at Wayne L-M in 1986 did not have them. I was checking each one out for a variety of different things. None of them had the air horns. Oh, there were 6 in stock, then. I am pretty sure that no Mustang McLaren had them, but there's one 87 on here with them. It's the 1st 87 I ever heard of with them..... It's all a big :?:

In the write up for the V6 verts, posted on this site, it does state that the 86 V6 vert did retain the airhorns.

Just as an open question to everyone out there.......

Does anyone have an 84-86 vert that does not have the horns?
