That is a very good question, I have seen pictures some where with the 140 M.P.H. speedo in a EuroCoupe I think it was. But I do do agree with negusm it is Federal Law because the SVO's speedo was up to 85 M.P.H then their were lines without numbers representing the speed which after 85 M.P.H.

Yes, the SVO had a higher speedo...and is an excellent illustration as to how Ford tried to circumvent the law.

The law went away about that timeframe too.

I am not sure but I think that over the counter speedos didn't count either. Meaning, you could buy one and put it in your car...but you couldn't get a car built from Ford with one (exception being the SSP).

Not sure where asc fit into all of this either. They obviously were not bound by the law either in 85/86.

Will what you were saying about over the counter speedos is just like ascMcLaren, it is a aftermarket making high end cars for Ford so it should not apply to them since the car is basically aftermarket.

I think because they were a company selling new cars that all federal laws still applied, but that doesn't account for 86

Well if thats the case then why would Ford put those lines past 85 on the SVO's. Why don't they just put 140.

my 1986 svo the speedo was the same way lines only after 85mph. I think the mclarens were ok to have one because they were "technically" aftermarket "used" cars.

One thing i love

is when people sell there suposed low mile 82-86 capris and mustangs and show the photos of odo and there you see an aftermarket 140 speedo

And i believe 5.0 non ssp ssv mustangs had the 85 mph speedos till 88 or 89.

The law expired in 85. Other car manufacturers started to use larger speedos sooner in 1986 such as Camaro Firebirds with v-8's and many foreign cars. Ford decided for some reason to retain the 85's longer then others and switched over in the Mustang during '89 model year. The SSP are exclusive packages for Law enforcement and were exempt. The school of thought was people wouldnt be tempted to go so fast if they didnt know how fast they were going. This was enacted after the second oil crunch in '79.
