ASC's Caster Camber/ suspensions/ chassis stiffening/ brakes
When they lowered our cars did they do anything to improve the caster camber of the front struts? It seems this is a rather of exclusive importance to us cause of them lowering our cars.
Does anyone now have caster camber plates on their ASC McLarens? If so did you notice any difference for better or worse?
What suspension upgrades has anyone done and what are your recommendations to others?
What about chassis stiffening? What have you done and was it worth it?
Anything new about your brakes?
I wonder what our limitations are with these cars. How strong they are, what they can handle, do's and dont's. Anyone feel free to share any of the performance upgrades whether be to the engines, suspension, brakes, chassis, etc... I am curious how much horse power some people are putting out, how extreme their cars are, and how their ASC's are holding up. Please specify if you have a hatch or convertible.
Thanks,
Nick

Hi Nick,ASCMCLRN wrote:Anyone? Bueller?I see someone else is asking a similar question to this regarding suspension so I am throwing this back in the mix of things. Thanks.
PM or email cobrajeff with these questions. He has done many of these mods to the 1985 McLaren I now have in my possesion. I am far from literate on the subject, but know for a fact he can provide you with some answers.
Good luck,

I will contact CobraJeff but direct him to answer it in the thread so this way others can benefit from what can be learned. Thanks!

The springs on my '89 were sagging, so I installed Ford Racing replacements anlong with Koni red's all the way around. I put polygraphite sway bar bushings and replaced the control arms with new Ford Racing replacements.
The alignment guy in our area wasn't happy with the way the suspension was at that ride height. He suggested installing the CC plates and then he would align it. I have not done that yet.
I used Hawk ceramic front brake pads and love them.
Last item added was the Maximum Motorsport strut tower brace. I think its the only one that bolts to the pinch weld, where three pieces of metal come together, making it a strong unit. This was the best improvement I have done. It really ties the front end and cowl together.
All these modes were over the last 4 or 5 years. I was using it as a daily driver until the summer of '05. Now, finallly its a weekend car.
Anyone attending the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale? I'll be there Monday and Tuesday...and maybe more. We also volunteered to help Ford out at the Ford Racing trailer at the Pavillions in Scottsdale this weekend and next (Sat & Sun-both weekends)

Hey Hank,
Thanks for responding. I imagine the caster camber plates are a big thing to do with our cars because of the lowering. It would have made sense for ASC to have modified our cars in this area.
If you get the cc plates done please let us know, I bet your car already handles incredibly better but with this adjustment will make it all come together so smoothly.

I can't speak as to how these cars handle horsepower mods, mine is only a stock V6, but I certainly can on the chassis upgrade mods.
My Capri has the following mods:
New inner and outer tierod ends
BBK caster/camber plates (had no problem meeting factory specs for alignment)
KYB shocks and struts
Quad shock, 8.8 posi rear with 3.27 ratio
Heavy front and rear swaybars with urathane bushings
Eibach lowering coil springs front and rear
Ford racing sub frame connectors
Mack boxed upper and lower rear control arms
8" by 15" rims all around
I have driven quite a few performance street cars and can say I am quite impressed at how tight this car is. This car has 140,000 miles on it and it still feels rock solid in the turns. I drive the car in the West Virginia where the roads can get quite narrow and twisting but the ole Capri corners flat and grips tight and is a sheer pleasure to drive.

No problem-that's what we're here for!
It does handle really well. And the shop highly recommended the CC plates. Not sure when I'll have those done. I have gotten a clunk in the front end that none of us can find. A new member of our local Mustang club is a chassis guy and has offered to put mic's on the car to listen to where its coming from. I'll let you know.

changing the tie rod tips only affects the bumpsteer so thats why they did itnegusm wrote:For the Coupes, they used TBird Tie Rod tips which I think are shorter or something. I was told that this helps the car's suspension since they also got the lower springs.
I do not know suspensions but that sounded like it was right.
