What springs came from ASC?

Now, I was told many years ago, by a person at asc McLaren WHILE these cars were actually being made, that the springs used in the 1984-1986 Full Package Coupes (Not EuroCoupe & Not GTP-IV) were the O-N-L-Y items that were actually MADE by McLaren !!
He went on to tell that there were none left (we found out later, that actually there were a few left) ... well, he went on to tell me that the closest to them, (almost identical) were Ford Motorsport M200 Springs. I think they too are long gone. From memory (at 2 AM) I think M200-B. If anyone wants, i'll double check in 7 hours.

The FMS springs originally came in two flavors. The 2000-B (commonly called the "B" springs) were progressive rate springs of the same rate as the GT hatchbacks of the day, just wound so they would yield a 3/4" to 1" lower ride height. The "C" springs yielded the same ride height as the "B" springs (give or take), but were a higher rate.
WHile I was going over the brakes on my 88 when I first bought it, I could have sworn the tags still on my springs were the same as the "B" set I installed on my old 20th Anniversary hatch and convertible back in the day. Sandy seemed quite sure that the springs were the "C" variety. Because of the ride quality, I have to disagree and say they are the "B" springs.

I think if you really dig through the archives (the old Yahoo ones). You might find the same info. Actually it was mentioned more than once that asc made them first and then Ford picked up on it and kind of "took over" production.
Basically the Motorsport B or C springs are supposed to be equivalent to what asc put on the car.

Okay, I went & looked it up in the ascMcLaren paperwork.
They are identical to Ford Motorsports M-5300-B springs.
"B" are called Sports Handling, while M-5300-C are called SUPER
Sports Handling. I do not see the difference.

Yeah, I thought they were the "B" springs. The difference between the two is that the "C" set is a higher spring rate. Meaning that if you thought your McLaren squeaked/rattled now, it'd be a lot worse with the "C" spring. If memory serves, the "C" spring was approaching the rate I would have used for SOLO II.

I am talking of 1984-1986 COUPES, yes.
'Verts, as far as I know, have the standard springs/shocks as any 5.0 of the era had.

Weren't you the one who told me one of your verts was noticably lower than a regular GT convertible at a show a while back? When I first brought up the idea that my car looked lower and had tags on the springs that reminded me of the color and codes on the "B" springs, you told me that the verts did have different springs and you were pretty sure they were the "C" springs. I bet we could probably find the thread somewhere in the archives.
The two previous owners of my car wouldn't have changed the springs. They were not car guys. WHich leaves either the dealer or ASC. Based on the blueish overspray on the control arms and springs, I gotta say that my vert got lower springs from ASC.

I would not say "yes" because I do not have it as an absolute fact, which would be, as far as I am concerned, the asc McLaren paperwork to back it up. I do have such for the coupes (all years). It may be, to my eye they certainly look lower, but I lack positive paperwork to verify.

Stock ride height
Per the 85 spec book, the stock ride height for Mustang and Capri is 5.07" to 5.29" from the axle tube to the frame (flat plate area next to the rubber bumber for the axle). From there you can measure the ground to the top of the fender opening and the same for all 4 wheels. Usually cars are within .25" all around but I don't recall the spec. right now. There are leveling blocks which can be used to even out the rear right height if uneven.
