Hello..Question on the pull-down motor on my 87 Mustang

Hello everyone, just fell onto the site the otherday researching my "new" ASC/Mclaren Mustang. It's an 87.

Anyway, the pulldown motor for the top seems to be dead. Is there anyone with any tips on this? I've heard of lubing it, still nothing. I can pop the screw in, but getting it out is a royal pain, since the motor doesnt want to work.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Welcome! I would do a search here on "pull down motor" and see what you come with. This has been asked often.

Its probably going to require a replacement. They can be had at www.ascmclaren.com or there are certain cars in junkyards you can check for them (a search should find this out).

Thanks for the help. Any cheaper alternative then the 322 bucks for the motor? seems a wee bit excesssive, but i'll get it if i need it. I've tested it all out, gets power and all that good stuff. Just wondering if there is a cheaper alternative? I've read a bit on the Caddy trunk motors working? I'll have to look into that some more.

That's the alternative....checking junkyards or ebay for those Caddy motors.

If you're good with electronics, you might be able to take the motor apart and figure out what is wrong. I'm guessing they probably overheat and the winding needs to be redone which is not cheap anymore considering the cost of copper and such.

To those who have forgotten, and to our newest friends, just joining us,
please remember when you are putting UP your top, and it's time to place the big aluminum screw into the hole on the tonneau cover, that you place it in there and then put your right hand's finger tips UNDER the cloth hem of the roof and then push downward on the button behind the driver's seat. When you feel the top's material beginning to get snug upon your fingertips....STOP STOP STOP always allow enough travel - that if the top will not release, the next time, by stopping the downward travel of the big screw, before the end of the cycle, it allows you the "luxury" of reversing the spinning worm gear (then turning the other direction) and that will free up the drive and you'll be fine.
These things frequently freeze and if you have left yourself the ability to push the top of the button to release the screw, it will then be 'free ' and will work !

2 ascMcLarens here.....Top down many many mnay time, NO problem 'cause I always leave just a little not done leaving like 3/4 inch travel still there should she freeze, I can still go down a little bit, STOP and reverse to be able to put the top down
