Who knows Sandy, maybe mine have been changed out. Hippy said they were original, but I don't know. I noticed Mike M.'s #26 car has black also. Somebody let me know if it's possible mine are correct for this car. If not, I'll fix them. Did Mercury go back and forth on the 86's?

They are supposed to be black. We have dealer sheets showing the cars arriving with chrome on one side and black on the other. The chrome one was swapped at the dealer for a black one. Your's probably got through since both sides were the same and the guy didn't notice.

Repros are extremely nice. One of the few items better than originals. Contact FMR.

NOT SO FAST

Post by Sandy »

Here be the truth........
The chrome units were WHAT WAS fited to the GS, the 4 or 6 Cyl. Model. The charcoal/black ones were to go into the RS model. The assembly line workers got confused, as the 302 V-8 was AN OPTION in the GS ! SOoo, some GS cars coming down the line were V-8s (with the cheap seats in them) Workers were probably rushed and who knows what was "correct" in the Mustangs regarding ths ??? So... me, personally, if a Judge, would NOT mark demerits for chrome power window/door lock plates. Really, that's the least of it all. Black would be correct, assuming you have the articulating seats, the upper roof drip moulding in black, rather than chrome. But what you have is definately factory original.
As far as I am concerned, it's not a bigiee......

Sandy, the 84-86 RS cars also got chrome bezels. The Capri did not follow the Mustang in this regard.

I cannot find a specific reference to it in the lit, but all the 84-86 Capri RS cars that I have seen, even extremely low mileage and unmodified cars received chrome bezels.

I have seen far far too many 84-86 RS Capris with chrome bezels to conclude that they are all flukes.

Note the following for 1986:

They say that the bezels for the GS are chrome and the 5.0L/RS is unchanged. This to me would mean the Capri RS received chrome bezels.

Here is that correction paper I referred to:
http://www.ascmclarencoupe.com/ascLiter ... tion_4.jpg

Note the door lock knob was marked as wrong. Probably that car received chrome knobs from Ford.

Thinking back, I almost swear that my car had a chrome LH PW bezel and a black RH PW bezel.

But my car has been apart and together so many times by me and a few previous owners that there is no telling what came originally on the car except for the engine/transmission.

SO, what does this mean?
Mine is factory original. all are black, door handles, frames, power window buttons & frame & power Door lock buttons & frames.
Also black are the upper interior door lock buttons that you manually push down & pull up. I have seen many othe 85/96s with this same configuration as mine.

I know your car is factory original...except you told me you got a chrome bezel on the driver's side and got a black one from the dealer to swap it. To me that just means ascMcLaren missed that one because we know that 85/86 ascMcLaren cars should have black bezels.

However, as far as Ford was concerned, my belief is that Ford built all 84-86 Capris, regardless of trim level with chrome power window/lock bezels. The exception being the ascMcLarens.

Initially I thought they should follow the Mustang too and the RS trim package should have black bezels. However, all low mileage or unmodified RS cars I have seen have been chrome. Plus the Mercury Fact Books never say that the RS package received anything different for the interior bezels.

NO ! No reason to. It's one of many ascMcLarens and RS Capris just like that.

The only people who would question it would be an ascMcLaren enthusiast.

You are not liable to run into too many of those. And if you do, they will probably know the story of the mismatched bezels well.

What you should do is insure it with Grundy as an "ascMcLaren" with stated value! NOT as a Mercury Capri and with a normal auto insurance company. It's way better coverage, for pennies on the dollar in comparison to what XYZ car insurance company will charge you.

Trust Uncle Sandy on this !!
