My mother has lost TWO cars in Stone Mountain, GA in the last six months--right out her driveway in a nice neighborhood.

Something is going on down there. Rumor is, those nice folks displaced by Katrina have made the evil Georgians pay for their wicked ways, you know, being employed and obeying the law and all.

'Chop shops' buy these cars, get a good title trom an old body, fix them up and retitle them as 'rebuilts' or some other title acronym and sell them. The original VIN is long replaced with the 'rebuilt' title but the base car is there. A replica GT will bring $150,000.00 in good condition, so it's well worth the risk to them.

A 68 GT clone gets $150k?

$50k maybe.

The thing about this that smells funny is that the car is a total pile. I wonder if this is an inside job or an insurance scam.

Would a random crook know it's a Shelby? I kind of doubt it.

Stolen Shelby

Post by capri50asc »

My father owned a used car lot from 1972 to 2002. he had about 20 cars stolen right of the lot ( vandals , lot damage etc,) I remember he purchased a 1973 ford Mustang Mach 1 "Q code" Yellow , black Int , Magnam wheels, little rust. not bad ! drove in on a Monday morning in the summer of 1981. Car was gone .........Never seen again, along with many 65-73 Mustang. My brother had a mint 1985 Camaro Z-28 the car was stolen right off our driveway at home. It was parked at the end of the horseshoe drive. The front wheels were cut pointing toward a large rock! The car thief broke in , broke the Ing lock and hot wired the car...............then.......drove off at night and the rock got caught under the front wheel well between the front wheel and the bumper. The crook drove down the street at night, no lights on. with a rock stuck rolling. The great news is this! The police had a undercover officer parked at the end of the street and caught the thief!

There was a car dealer in Pinellas County, Florida that had a Corvette stolen off his lot. It was recovered 28 years later. Fully restored and with a full tank of gas! Wish I had seaved the articles that came out in the paper. That was at least 12 years ago.
