If you're going to make a modified show car you should make a fiberglass removeable hardtop. Make something that will stand out of the crowd. A McLaren deserve it!

I'll never understand why people turn rare cars into common cars. They do it with Capris too. Turn them into mustangs when there were only 1 Capri made to every 8 Mustangs.

not to be rude to you all the people on the forum, this is the same car that you all were trashing, saying, "dont walk away, run away" so im doing you all a favor and saving this car.

as far as thousands of lx and gts, like I said, I couldnt find a clean unmolested 87-93 triple black gt

atleast not for what you payed for the ASC

I know of a blk top and ext gray int but he wants like 6k and a red with wht int and top for like 12k

This group is mostly a Purist group.

It is your car and the value of ASC does make it easy to mod.

Would love to see you and the car at the GPIV/ASC get togethers.

I am actually thinking of attacking this project. I have 2 tops right now, was thinking that if I tack weld the top frame on one it may not be too difficult to cover it in fiberglass and make one. Its a long term idea, right now I am more concerned with the restoration, but once that is done I may try (if I haven't sold the spare top)

Ya know, I have stopped calling people down on the rug, for straying far away from total STOCK, original as recieved by the ordering original dealership and the reason is two fold.

1. It's anti good (such a word?? :) ) to the car hobby and it makes for bad feelings and relationships. They are gonnad o what they want to do to their car. AND

2. I don't wanna be called down on the rug, for keeping mine 100% stock, super duper low miliage, showroom original.

To each his own, to enjoy his/her car as they see fit.

Perhaps this new outlook has come about becaus I have seen many die, lately, and it is easier to be nice to people than argue with them, 'cause they ain't gonna listen you OR me.
Just enjoy your McLaren however you like and i will do the same.

[quote="acejoness"]besides this is the car that came from SUBURBAN FORD for $4995 and the people on the forum said to run from this car they said it was a pile of junk, so I guess im rescuing this car[/quote

It always amazes me how clarification questions, observations, or statements of fact seem to often get interpreted as criticism (and I'm guilty of it myself).

I agree - it's your car, you put out your hard earned cash for it when others didn't and that gives you the undeniable right to do whatever you want with the car. Have fun with your project.

Since a bit of bashing seems to have begun in this thread, I'll point out that everyone needs to keep in mind how these threads started ... very nice looking McLaren specific parts were offered for sale - with no mention of the fate or condition of the car. While admittedly an assumption, it is not a leap to think that those nice parts are coming from a car of similar nice condition - which right or wrong will always raise the ire of people interested in rare cars (any rare cars, not just ascMcLarens). Had the car (or at least it's condition) been identified when the parts were first offered for sale, I'm confident the 'purists' comments would have been quite different. And had these been Capri parts, I'd be contacting you inquiring about prices and shipping cost. :-)

I agree do the car your way. Heck I am!!! I understand were everyone is coming from about stripping all the asc parts of and putting stock or other aftermarket on. With my 85 once I get some rewelding done from where someone else had a roll bar and cut out the floor pans I am considering going with a 32v 4.6 I have in the shop and the IRS rear suspension. As you know I am wanting to update my interior with yours. Or atleast with what I can use from the mustang, and putting a Saleen grownd effect. The car will be just the way I want it. Wish we could have talked in the late fall I just sold a 88 triple black arizona mustang with a 347 and an 8 pt cage. well I gave it away for 2000. Well good luck and hope to make it over next weekend

I am changing my color of my interoir and updating in my 85 vert. What are you looking for for yours? Some of mine is in nice condition, some I am recovering. Let me know and I will send you pics. I would rather see it go to go use than just sit in my shop.

YES, ASC/MC LAREN USED RSATRAINT IN THE INTERIOR. ADDING LUXURY FEATURES, SOME FROM THE LINCOLN TOWN CAR PARTS BIN. BUT SOME OWNERS CANNOT APPRECIATE RESTRAINT. THEY WANT IN-YOUR FACE ! THESE CARS WILL SELL TO OTHERA OF LIKE MIND, BUT...COLLECTORS WITH CONSIDERABLE MORE MONEY, WILL PAY THE BIG BUCKS FOR THE OFIGINAL CAR S AS THEY WERE DELIVERED TO THE ORDERING DEALERSHIP.

I ASK YOU.... WOULD A 1986 SALEEN OWNER, GRAFT ON A 1986 MERCURY CAPRI FRONT FENDER?
WOULD A 1971 BARRACUDA OWNER GRAFT ON A 1971 DODGE CHALLENGER GRILLE?

WOULD A 19779 ELDORADO SWAP OUT A 1979 OLDS TORONADO FRONT CLIP?

TO EACH HIS OWN

hey my car is so far from original and been cut up drag raced and parts swapped that it wuld be cheeper to just buy one of yours than restore mine. yes it is rare car number 242 but i would rather see it going down the road being enjoyed than crushed in ascrap yard. I do not have the oringinal front clip, rear clip, drivetrain, and most of the wiring has been cut up or is just missing. I am not redoing this car for resale but for me to drive daily and enjoy. There are quite a few examples of prestine oringal low milage cars out there. some peaple think I am lucky becouse mine is so far abused that no matter what I do with it it will be an approvement and I am not distroying a rare piece of auto history.
