Hey everyone,
I’ve been working on an ASC McLaren (based on the Fox Body Mustang) and noticed a few systems that likely use stepper motors, especially in the instrument cluster and possibly the HVAC controls.
Has anyone here:
Replaced or repaired the gauge stepper motors in these cars?
Had to deal with HVAC blend doors or idle air control involving stepper-based actuators?
Swapped in modern stepper-driven gauges while keeping the ASC McLaren interior style?
I’m considering updating the cluster internals with modern stepper motors (like X27.168) while keeping the OEM look. Would love to hear if anyone’s done something similar — or run into issues.
Any insight, wiring tips, or compatible parts would be appreciated!
Stepper Motors in ASC McLaren
Motors
Due the time period our cars were developed and the fact they were not high models, no stepper motors were used. The Mustang/Capri was a low end car product.
Having said that, the ASC cars get even less support on aftermarket parts. Fortunately/unfortunately, one supplier has supported the car specific parts by buying up the left over inventory way back in the 90s-2000. Because of this there is not a lot of needed parts to be developed.
As for the HVAC, I believe the aftermarket AC suppliers already have motorized controls for their 87-93 AC kits. It might not be exact for the 79-86 but we all know behind the dash, its all the same 79-93. I have not sized up the aftermarket controls but other models they supply for look pretty close to the 79-86 HVAC controls.
I'm only speaking of the ASC specifics and HVAC. I believe the gauges are supported by the Foxbody aftermarket. I have no experience with those.
The only other item might be the pull down motor. The 84-86 is pretty well supported by the GM products. I am not familiar with the 87-90 version to know if that is supported with spare parts.
Unless there is a repair parts need, anything developed is a one-off part. In general, Foxbody guys only spend $$ on engines and suspension.

While stepper motors are not so hi-tech today, most owners have difficulty troubleshooting and diagnosing the simple analog gauges we currently have.
