'88 McLaren on Ebay #1021

Hi All

Just wondering what everyone thought of this car. It would be a perfect fit to go with our white '87 & '89's.

yes looks like a good buy for 3k and neat his has the front disk brakes in place of the drums

It looks better than 90% of them with 108,000 miles! I sent him a "ASK the seller a ???" and set him up with the correct production numbers.

Ever notice that appox. 1 out of 20 OWNERS actually really knows the correct production numbers, and the other 19 guess? Yet, they are all over the 'web, for anyonewho has .3% interest to find out.

In 3 weeks ago(s) "AutoTrader" there were 9 ascMcLarens 4-sale. Each had taken the time to post that theirs was 1 of____. Of the 9 ads, only one had the correct numbers, the remainder were all over the map !

They are on my site, Hank's site, and Mustang Marty's site, have been published in Mustang Illustrated, Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords, Collectible Automobile, and Hemmings Muscle Cars. They are not hidden.

Thanks! I think they are just not "McLaren" folks. They have a nice car and that's all. So production numbers don't mean much. With all the sites that post the correct production figures, are they just making these numbers up?

I like the car, but it has been completly repainted, it has a newer vinyl top, he thinks a transmission service (could be major) is needed, and it has had some body damage (fixed with original parts) in the past. It also has Motorsport disk brakes the dealer installed when he purchased it new.

I'm not sure what really constitutes a "TRUE" McLaren owner, but I do know that I owned mine from day 1, kept it in amazing condition, kept all the original manuals and service records and never deviated from the original car or added bogus aftermarket parts. This car was a steal at $4000. It is immaculate inside and out and I really hated to part with it.
FYI, the new owner of the car picked it up today, we drove it to the transmission shop together and as it turns out, a $20.00 grommet part was all that was needed to correct the transmission problem.
I feel really good that this guy ended up with the car instead of it going to some snooty, know it all that devotes their life to McLarens and busting the balls of those who aren't allowed to simply enjoy the car. I don't make it a point to know every aspect and minute detail of every thing I own. I've always known the car was special, ,that was enough for me.
I applaud you for the registry, albeit I still don't know who Muscat is or what history he has as an automotive designer. And one last thing... my McLaren came with an 80 mph speedometer. I didn't find that on your web site either. And if a total 1015 were produced in 1988, why is mine badged 1021?

your car was not avalable with 80 mph speedo did you mean 85? and the build #'s are clearley stated above as with statements made most of the owners truley do not know what they have on these babys that is why there is a sight like this to help school those who know not!

From the tone of his post, I am not too sure that he is really interested in the answers to his questions. If I am wrong, then Peter Muscat is the man that designed the working roof and the transformation of a 2-Door Sedan notchback with trunk into a 2-seat roadster. He perfected the design and then sold the rights to manufacture it to American Sun Roof (ASC) corporation in Michigan.

Seems to me that I was complimentary to mark over his car...

So...at # 1021, subtracting the 479 from 1987, mark's car was the 542nd 1988 producted. About 53% of the way thru 1988 production.

Maybe he is just sad he sold his ASC and has to take it out on somebody since his wife said "it needs to go" thank the good lord above my wife does not dictate my car dealings

I really liked the car. Since I had to sell my '87 to upgrade to the '88 my budget was only about $3000. You car was definitly worth more than you got. Especially that the transmission was an inexpensive fix.

I don't know when it will happen, but one day people (other than this group) will realize what special cars these are and the values will go up.

First off, Mark loved this car and it shows in every way. Not one dent or scratch, motor is in perfect running condition, and the transmission being fixed for $20 was like winning the lottery for me. Buying a car on ebay is scary enough but when you know it already has issues you really start worrying. Mark was incredible to deal with and one of the most honest people I have ever encountered.

I am a current mustang owner as well, 91 GT, and have always been interested in the McLaren's. I am the first to admit I know nothing about them and have used this site to educate myself.

Thanks for all of the "good" info regarding this car and please take it easy on us "less educated" McLaren owners.
