For all the years, the 79-82 speedo was available, I'm surprised it isn't more prevalent.

I know there were 2 types available sometime around 1986. I bought a new 5.0 LX which was ordered 11/85 and it showed up 2-3 months later. Maybe it was delivered 11/85 but it still took forever to get it. Immediately, I went to the parts dept. and ordered the speedo and I had to decide which one. I almost ordered the one I didn't like. The one with the link above was the one I ordered. Come to think of it, maybe they tried to sell me the 79-82 one which didn't match but would fit! Being the end of the 85 year, it was probably the 86 catalog. I don't kow when they came out but it was probably shortly after the 86 models came out (6/85?)

The old 85 MPH speedo had 400 miles on it.

Any of the pictures from the catalog would be greatly appreciated too. I wish I kept those catalogs

Yeah, I thought about that after I sent it.

I went back and put them in. (this board is sooo much better in that respect alone !!!)

I'll scan the pages and post them, hopefully I will have time to do that tonight.

Sorry it took me so long to get these pages scanned and up but here they are from the 1985, 1986, and 1987 catalogs.
I cropped them so that just the speedometers are visible.

I didn't scan any of the newer catalogs because the information and pictures didn't change after 1987, except of course when they were dropped from the catalogs.

You might also notice that the '79-'82 speedometer in the 1986 catalog (middle picture) does not have the "Ford Motorsport" logo on it. From 1987 until it was discontinued in 1995, it appeared with the logo. It also shows 24,678 miles on it too.

I wouldn't be surprised that most if not all of the "production" '79-'82 speedometers actually had the logo and the picture in the 1986 catalog was of a prototype, hence the mileage shown.

As you can see though, the 140 speedometer for the '83-'86 cars never wore the "Ford Motorsport" logo.

Maybe, but the car can go alot faster than what the stock 85MPH would tell us.

Top speed is 135 for turbo 4 and 5.0 foxbody cars 84 and up. It is certainly more useful from 100-125 mph range.

Shelby GT500's came with a 140 speedo too but the top speed for a Shelby GT500 is:

1967 - 120 mph.
1968 - 129 mph.
1969 - 115 mph.

I was just reading your message, and I have an 88 Mclaren with a 85 MPH speedometer.

Car is was purchased from the original owner in original condition.

I was wondering the same thing.

My 88 mclaren, was ordered from the factory with a 160 speedo. Or should I say, before the original owner drove it off the lot, it had been equipped with a 160 speedo. Looks good.... I haven't checked lately, but are they still available? I have noticed that motorsport is slowly discontinuing things for the 79-86s and some stuff for the 87-93s. I know there are A LOT of aftermarket companies that have stuff, but some stuff just isn't available. I did find out (for those of us also with 85 mclarens), PAINLESS WIRING is going to be offering a duraspark ignition wiring harness sometime after the new year. My 85 duraspark harness is looking really bad and ford motorsport's answer is "just put an MSD ignition on it." I understand what they are saying, but no good for me at national shows (if you know what I mean).... Ford has dropped most stock things for the 85 and under, since it was the last year carbd and last year duraspark ignition.

Goes to show you that someone out there gives a little crap about our cars.... However, also goes to show you where the market is. Rarity and demand also has a price. Motorsport (who has never been too cheap) use to sell these harnesses for $80....
