ASC Mclaren Capri Hood Insulation
I wanted to let everyone know that I contacted the gentleman who advertises the Capri Turbo hood insulation on Ebay and requested to have a regular non turbo solid hood insulation for my 85 coupe. This is one of the last items that I needed to complete the restoration on my 54K mile 85 ASC Mclaren coupe and I have been looking for one for years. This hood insulation that I received fit well, has the cut out for the engine compartment light, and has the cut out for the under hood decal. The insulation material is similar to the original. It is not press molded like the original but when it is installed it looks well and will help with the engine heat on the paint.
If anyone is interested he is listed as balleks classic car and truck parts on Ebay and his email address is balleks@verizon.net. They are very nice people to deal with.

I can probably get back to the garage where the car is stored by this weekend for a picture.
The holes for the mounting clips, underhood decal, and light are professionally press cut. I was expecting a so so insulation and it turned out to be a professional looking part and I am very fussy with my restorations.

Do you have a link to his parts on ebay?
Was the sheet of insulation folder when you got it?
The reason I ask for pictures was I got a sheet from a different guy. It was press cut too, but extended to far. It goes past the little clips at the front of the hood...but the front DOES line up with other holes that are supposed to be unused at the front.
Please get a picture if you can of the whole installation so I can see it...maybe it is better than what I got.

I found him when I looked under the 1983 Capri search.
The sheet was folded but not kinked and it was in a bag.
It fit under the hood tabs like the original but there is holes in the insulation where it would get slid under the tabs. (you never see the holes)
All of the holes for the clips did line up perfectly and the insulation is cut on a angle like the original at the hood hinges.
I looked at my 1984 GT350 insulation with 4,500 original miles just to compare the type of insulation and as I said it is not identical as to the molded original but it is nice enough that I dont think many people will notice at shows and it will keep some the heat off of the hood. I am not sure anyone will come out with a identical molded reproduction anytime soon.

85-86 Capris got the 79-82 Mustang (non turbo) insulator pad. 83-86 Mustang pads will not work. I had a NOS 83-86 one and it did not line up. The Mustang hood changed in 1983.
84 and EARLIER Capris seemed to get a special Capri only pad...it does not match ANY of the Mustang pads. I need to can Green Sales or a Dealer and get some additional part numbers.
WHY in 1984 or 85, Ford went with the 79-82 Mustang pad for the Capri, is a mystery.

Possibly.
I haven't verified the pad part number...there may be yet another surprise.
All I know:
I had a NOS Mustang 83-86 pad. It didn't fit the 84 or 85 Capri hood I have....close but not quite. I have a 79-82 Mustang pad which fits the hoods and is verified by my dealer as the right pad. It also has the correct hole placement for the 85-86 underhood vacuum sticker.
The 84 hood has an old battered pad on it...and the vacuum sticker is in a DIFFERENT location than the 85-86 Capri hood. It is also shaped slightly differently....but mounts the same. I think this pad was used from 79-84.
