Yeah, he posted the car in the classifieds. Sounds like a really honest seller.

If you were looking for a daily driver then this car is a ways away from that.

With the original wheels and new air dam it's well worth the $800 he's now asking. Boy if I didn't have "wife" issues, I'd be tempted to finaggle my dad to head out to Ohio and trailer it back to NY for me. Problem is he's got 10 project cars himself and mom just got a sad little MGB.

yup that's me.

Im really sorry i couldnt make her run and i've NO idea why it would start and run one week but not the next (the only difference is it was about 20 degrees colder this week). unfortunately i cant afford to drop more money to find out why it wont run consistently.

It was a great car when i daily drove it a few years ago and i always planned on restoring it but life has a habit of getting in the way...

rare doesn't mean valuable. There is a reason only 9 automatics were made...How many people who really want a performance car want an automatic? Personally..I wouldn't even buy an automatic performance car ( that may be an oxymoron )...if you had a choice. But that is me and lots of people who think they are performance minded have automatics,,,,I just don't see it. To me they are facsimiles...but thats my opinion :o)

Well, Pete allow me to give the the reason for the Automatic Performance Cars, actually two reasons.

First, and broader reaching and not personal reason:

In heavily populated areas, such as where I live (Northern New Jersey) there is extremely heavy traffic. Example, from my house to where I go every day is a grand total of 6 miles, in one direction. (12 miles round trip). I'll address just one way, or 6 miles. In that 6 miles I encounter 15 traffic lights and one stop street. In the mornings I normally get stuck behind a couple of school buses, and they stop every 200 feet to pick up more kids. Do you realize how many times, just to go 6 miles this would require shifting ? Clutch-work and shifting? After a while it makes driving a hassle. Much easier to put it in "D" and let the tranny do the work. New York? New York is even worse as is every major city in America, from Phila to Manhattan to Chicago to Boston and beyiond.
Yet many of us (like me) like a powerful car. There are some cars that with an Auto have actually been clocked faster than their manual counterparts. More 1968 - 1971 Hemis were sold with Torqueflite than with a 4-Speed Stick!! Nothing "lazy" about a Auto Hemi ~

Now, on a personal level.......

I inheirited from both parents high blood pressure. Not controlled, it can be fatal. Mega millions of people have this.
In order to control it I need to take 5 to 6 pills a day. I have done this for the past 25 years. As you are well aware of, pills often have side effects, and one common side effect of this catagory of medicine to treat hypertension is that after a few years, your feet (or a foot) can lose sensitivity to touch or feel. The toes on my left foot are numb. Cannot feel anything, at the bottom where the toes connect to the foot, it's also numb. THEREFORE, I have no feeling in the top portion of my left foot. THEREFORE I cannot work or "feel" a clutch, so I must have an automatic.

Those are two examples as to why some of us prefer our high performance cars with an automatic.

By the way, the 5-Speed McLaren Coupes wore the 3.08:1 axle ratio.
(Some had the standard 2.73:1 ~ as the 3.08 was an option)
The Automatic 1986 (only) McLarens wore the 3.73:1 Axle ~

With that gearing I'd think a 1986 Auto would be faster than a 5-Speed 2.73:1 Coupe of 84 85 or 86. (Or the two would be a photo finish.)

Corvettes: Last year Automatics accounted for 60% of production orders, by the way!

I am glad you love your cars and love sticks (or manuals) but please, try and be a bit more tolorant of we who like Automatics or for persoanl reasons or physical reasons need an Automatic.

Count me as a fan of the automatic transmission. I have owned a few performance cars (SVO and a couple of Cobras) with manuals, and I have pledged to never own one again. For every time that I had fun running through the gears, there were hundreds of times that I sat in traffic, shifting N-1-2-N-1-2-N-1-N-1 over and over and over. It wasn't worth it.

Long live the automatic.

(Note to Ford: If you insist on making Cobras without an optional automatic, I will continue buying your competitor's products.)

I dont think Ford has an automatic capable of handling a Cobra. Heck it took them how many years to even a get a 6speed.

You aren't kidding. My Father Enlaw just bought a F-250 6 months ago. Has been in the shop for over 60 days in total. All about the auto...

First it stopped going into gear. They fixed it then it had no reverse then it leaked all over his drivway. Finally they replaced it with another trans that slipped on the way home from the dealership.

The papers have been filed for the Lemon Law :(

Sad because the rest of the truck is awsome!

first of all..no way an auto beats a stick..several reasons...
first lets talk ratios...can we ignore the torque converter? So first gear in an AOD is 2.4 :1 multiplied by 3.73 as you want to use. 2.4 X 3.73 = 8.9 First gear in the T5 is 3.35. We can multiply that by 2.73 if you wish and the answer is 9.15. The final ratio is still lower with the T5 and the 2.73. Now take into account that the AOD is robbing about 20 hp to spin itelf and hopefully you can see why what you propose is wrong. We haven't even gotten into second and so on. As far as drag racing...well sure Automatics are used, but that is because consistency is needed, not the fastest elapsed times. We are talking bracket racing right? Because that is where you see the A/T...in the other divisions (although a very modified alien type transmission :o) they are rowing gears...regardless of the clutch/trans setup. Sure Corvettes are made with A/T..but is that a benchmarK ? Not to me...the American car companies will make whatever sells, that is all they care about. How many Cobra Mustangs did Ford make with automatics? Sorry about your personal problems, but my statement doesn't mean you can't own an automatic ( my Mark VIII is an automatic and I'm not interested in changing it ). You do what you have to do...but it is not the fastest setup. And if being fastest isn't what a performance car is all about, then I'm in the wrong profession.

In perpsective speaking of Fords or Mustangs you are right however in many cases over the years the Vettes or GM's with automatics were faster then the sticks until the 6speed came out. Automatics have come a long way take a look at the tiptronic Porsche automatics for example. Oh and yes stall converters or swapping gears (either type in this case) is commonplace.

I don't get it Nick...you can't refute the facts I gave....so it is just some people can't drive sticks well enouigh to make a difference and/or they are not into the driving sensation enough to realize the difference. That is why SOME cars are made with automatics...but because of HP loss, they will ALWAYS be slowing than a well driven stick. The HP is always there..always.

You are exactly right by the examples you are giving based upon many Ford applications however my point is it is missleading for one to say that a manual transmission is always better then an automatic as far as performance goes. The GM cars Vette, Camaro, Trans Am were actually faster with an automatic then stick for many years. Newer automatics are getting better then ever and rob less hp. Modded automatics are incredible too. With automatic transmissions like the tiptronic mentioned before there will be no need for manuals in the future.

Not a Capri

Post by 914Driver »

OK, before I do this, please put down the rocks, bottles and any sharp instruments.

Thank you.

I was looking for an Auto-Xer and track day car. I came up with a BMW 325i 5spd with 130k miles. $400.

Just think the first repair you make on that you could have bought the Capri and a new motor. Just kidding, hehe. Best of luck!
