Hi Sandy;
Are you shopping for more, or trying to find the other 'anniversary' cars?

Trying to locate some (any) of the other 12 Silver Anniversary Cars.

It's darn impossible, as only 2 escaped in Silver ! I own one, the otrher I've located in Maimi-area. 11 of the 12 have Scarlet Red interior, one has Crystal Blue.

Sandy you should have somebody run those through a Carfax. It's a small enough list.

There may be some info there to point you to the last state the cars were in. Then you can write and attempt a title search for the latest owner.

I have # 132862. Bought it new and it's only been driven by me. Sits in a garage with 26 other cars, beside a 1967 (390) Coupe and a 1970 Mach.

WOW, HOLY COW I actually found one! Thanks for acknowledging.

She is White, yes? Red interior with matching white roof, yes ?

D.P. should be 1909, Yes? Do you know THE story behind them ?

If not, go here:- http://www.ascmclaren.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=229

Sandy,

The d/p IS NOT 1909, never was, but the most consistant things about these cars is each is one of one - things happened. The plate was not lost, just not 1909.

It is white on white, Scarlet interior, base color from Ford was black, and the Sikkens ASC applied white is a 3 stage paint.

I have seen post here regarding no clear. The Sikkens code on my trunk lid is a 3 stage. Maybe others are not. The Lestek alt was also 'original', as the Kenwood cassette w/ amp.

Regret the white top, as it is the only plastic top of the group and looks cheezy compared compared to the canvas.

There had been substantial requests for a white roof, beginning mid-'88 ! Personally, I do like the white top, **IF** kept clean, and WHITE !
Are you aware of the reason FOR the Lestik Alt?? If not, let me know. You do not want to tell me the D.P. # ? You can PM me if so.... My records do indicate 1909, as well the color scheme & the VIN. Pretty special unit, there, RNE. :D Glad you "found One & Other!"

Sandy;

I too like the white top color, it's just not availiable in anything except plastic, never was so the overall quality is not there.
It does LOOK great. That's why I ordered it.....

I was told by ASC the 'Hi Output' alt was due to the amp and top motor. Mine has a 130A tag on it, never checked actual max output but could, if it mattered. The Lestec I have is also a marine unit - SS springs - but overall it seems overkill to compensate for such minor load addition to the car. It would have make sense if underdrive pulleys were used, but if these were on the adgenda my car missed them.

I will send you the D/P next time I uncover the car, honestly don't remember the # but it is not 1909.

{I will try & get this correct. As some of you know, sometimes I mixed myself up :lol: }

The 1989 & 1990 cars corrected a problem-of-sort. The problem was that a certain electrical feature was in violation of the accepted safety code that all auto manufacturers have to abide by. That code (for safety reasons) stated that no electrical features that could be dangerious were to operate after the car was turned off. Features such as Pwr. Windows, etc. Well the 1984 - 1988 ascMcLaren 'Verts violated that! It was not caught until late in the model run of 1988. For 1989 & 1990 ascMcLaren improvised a "mickey mouse fix" ..... The tonneau release button works all the time on a prior to 1989 example, but on the 1989 & 1990 a series of steps MUST be taken in order for the top to work. Items altered include the Emergency Brake lever. On the (unseen) back end of the stalk there is a button. When that brake lever is pulled up, the back of it goes down, and the button is depressed, thusly allowing the tonneau to "pop" in order to raise (or lower) the top.
Along with THAT is the fact that the ignition has to be either "on" or the car running, or both (I forget). The Tonneau cannot be Popped using the normal procedure of pushing the buttom behind the driver's seat.
To make this all run (don't ask ME, YOUR Grandma was more mechanical than I am) they ran what's been called a HOT WIRE. This sukka goes from ignition, down under console (and or) under carpeting, TO THAT switch, and then out the switch, under carpet, under console to firewall, thru firewall to somewhere near or by the battery, possibly to a fusable link.....

Therefore there is ALWAYS a "Hot Lead" ..... IF IF IF IF you were to take a 1989/1990 to a dealer or an independant shop and complain of a dead battery, they do a test and tell you you have a short, somewhere. Their meter would tell them so. Reason? There is ALWAYS an AMP draw even when all is shut down, turned off and closed up! It's that Hot Line, but they have no way of knowning.

This is the reason our 1989/1990 frequently have dead batteries, if not started for say like 2 weeks. It's sorta like leaving a illuminated vanity mirror down & in the open posistion. Like THAT kinda draw.

Now, ascMcLaren knew this and didn't want FoMoCo (hand that feeds them) to be constanly getting under warrantee (claims) for burnt out Alternators, due to the above, so they fitted the McLarens with the Marine Unit Lestik 130AMP, which they found to be the largest Alt. whose application would work and fit. When the battery is dead, that the draw continues, it kills the alternator, so that was the reason for the monster Alt.

Whew~ !!

Do you know what the amp meter should read? I have installed two Alpine amps in the car and my needle fluctuates a lot. I can't remember if it was doing this prior to the amp installation. I want to add under drive pulleys, but not if i will have charging problems

I'm sorry I do not know that. I do not think THAT info is printed anywhere. Is Lestic still around ? If so, they shlould be able to tell.

Personally (allthough I know you didn't ask me) I don't think it's a good idea.

Lestek Alternator

Post by hanksgt »

The bearing in my '89 Lestek went bad in 2003. We tested the unit for output at Phoenix Generator and only got about 50 amps. Dave rebuilt it using a more beefy GM back half and it tested at 83 amps output max. Works fine for me. Dave did not have any kind words for the Lestek units and showed me many shortcomings in the unit compared to the GM unit.
