Nope! I call "Foul Ball" ~
Reasons:
1) is VIN is 616189. All Began the "6" ~ drop the first 6 and ya have 16,189 or the 16,189th - 1985 Fox Bodied car made for 1985 MODEL year.
Now they were numbered with (along with) Mustangs interrmittently, with no distinction. Since 18,654 - 1985 Capris were made in total, and 121,142 Mustangs were made in total, Capri build equalled 15.40% of total Fox-Build, for ther MODEL run. Taking 15.40% of this particular VIN would indicate that this car was one of the first 2,500 1985 CAPRIS made. In view of this....this car was no way sent to California, originally. This car HAD TO BE within the initial batch of cars sent to asc.
Simps, look on your driver's door jamb (by the lock) for a Ford applied decal. Look for a preprinted DSO (meaning those letters) and look below to see a 2 digit DSO CODE.
ascMcLaren was UNable to finalize transportation west of the Mississippi UNTIL the start of the 1986 model year. Any 1985s that are in that part of the USA were taken there by an owner who I'd assume moved there.
IF this car had red piping on the seats, I'd be prone to say it was dealer or owner made up by buying the parts, but the lack of RED piping would definately indicate it was made at Livonia, Michigan by asc.

That VIN# 616189 is not for my car it is for the guy I work with. His car was made in MI and he bought it brand new in MI. I posted that VIN# 616189 so you guys can add it to your database as another 85 blue and orange coupe found. He is the original owner and bought it brand new. I have seen this car and it is perfect missing nothing.
Considering your last post wouldn't my car 607922 have been built before his?

Your car would be # 7922 FOX bodied 1985. At the same 15.40% yours would be within the first 1,200 CAPRIS made for 1985 ! No Way California bound

The 607922 vin would be early then. Not sure then of the DSO numbers. I was told the first 2 digits are the DSO and anything else are for internal use....this is true for other Ford cars with special DSOs...maybe asc was strange or something.
The other guy's car is VERY VERY VERY late in the 1985 list (616189):
http://www.ascmclaren.org/phpBB/viewtop ... 96&start=0
When did asc stop buying Capris from Ford for the 1985 conversion? Any rough time frame?

I still understand how people talk about the VINs and that they were sequential between the Mustang and Capri but don't unsderstand one thing.
The way it was explained originally is that the vins went like this:
100001 --- Mustang
100002 --- Mustang
600003 --- Capri
100004 --- Mustang
100005 --- Mustang
etc etc
If this is true then we should see:
200001 --- Mustang
200002 --- Mustang
700003 --- Capri
200004 --- Mustang
200005 --- Mustang
I have never yet seen a 700k + vin number on a Capri. I've always been confused on this.

No confusion at all. The last VIN for the 1985 Fox Bodied cars was 739,796 > which would be unit # 139,796. The reason that you've never seen a Capri in the "7 hundred series" is because the Capri's went out early, or more than 40,000 units prior to the final Mustang.
When I mentioned that mine was a very late car, leaving ascMcLaren in August, & arrived at the dealer I bought it from, (it actually arrived on a truck carrying 1987 product.) It was, in fact, the only 1986 physically ON that truck! It was built BY FoMoCo (I believe) in June. Shipped to Livona for conversion, and had to wait its turn. Without looking at paperwork I seem to recall it was brought in to the building on or about the middle of July. It was shipped out on July 23rd and arrived August 9th. I got her on Aug. 21st.
But while she was built in June, and was among the final Capris, the Mustangs continued thru early September, because, recall, the 1987 was "all new" and was a delayed product !! 'Stangs ended the 1st week of September, I seem to recall.

Guys,
VIN numbers ARE NOT sequential. They are assigned when an order is placed and actually received in the Ford system. For example, my 93 Cobra was the 399th one built, on 2/15/93. Only one option, a rear defroster. There was going to be a "super Sound" option. Ford finally dropped it in March/April. People/dealers who ordered the car before I did (11/15/02) with Super Sound got a VIN earlier than mine, but ended up with a build date in May or June.
That's just an example. Also, if I remember correctly, the last 6 digits of the VIN are assigned across all models built at that particular plant.

Yes, but in the general scheme of things they do generally have something of an order to them. There are many exceptions to this like you say...including cars pulled out of line to fix defects and then getting put back in line weeks later.rlyons13 wrote:Guys,

Sandy, you say in 1986, the last Capri was built on Sept 7.
With Mustang production at 224,410 for the same year it still doesn't seem correct that we don't see any 700k cuns for 86 Capris.

OK here are some other numbers off of my door tag the previous DSO numbers I posted are correct I don't see a 2 digit number.
Exterior paint- XP
Body- 61D
Int. Trim- PA
AX- M
TR- 2BBBB
Below I am also listing the body tag as I see it on the car
Capri
607922 61D M
3LL DF ST
AC 06 HB S
PW MBW 02
EL-A 2 06 2 X 2NLR
The number 2 next to the EL-A was stamped right through the tag and did not look like the other numbers. Hope this helps I'm not to concerned where the car was destined to go after it was made I was just told that when it came to MI it came from CA. I would beleive it from how there are no signs of rust anywhere.
My main concern is that this is a real McLaren seeing how there was that theft ring making clones at one time. Thanks for your help guys.

With all the info I've given you guys in your opinion is this car a real McLaren? I might be selling it and don't want to falsly advertise the car. Also was the radar detector a option or did they all come with it? I can't tell if it was ever there. I don't have a pic showing it yet but it also has ascMclaren emblems on both door panels.
Thanks
Thanks
Exterior paint- XP
Body- 61D
Int. Trim- PA = Charcoal Grey SPort Seats
AX- M = 2.73:1 Locking Rear
TR- 2BBBB
The TR (Tranny) code breaks down into spring codes:
2 = 5 Speed
BB = Front Spreings
BB = Rear Springs
Capri
607922 = CUN
61D = Capri body
M = 5.0L
3LL = Midnight Blue
DF = Blackout Door Frames??
ST = Steel Bumper
AC = AC
06 = ??
HB = Heated Backs
S = ??
PW = Power Windows (NoPower Locks)
MBW = Manual Borg Warner 5 Speed Tranny
02 = ??
EL-A = Charcoal Grey Interior
2 06 2 X 2NLR = ??
These numbers are nearly identical to what my car has for codes. Spring codes, rear axle codes, missing exterior code on the door tag, etc...are the same on my car.

That link you sent me Mike has a guy over there with a VIN higher thanthe # made by 1,745 units. I dunno....I have letter from Mercury Div of Ford as well as 2nd letter FROM Ford, both with the 18,654 production # for the 1986 Capri.
Yes, the Radar unit was an option. Your car has it. Brand is Whistler Spectrum-II Superhetrodyne Integral Remote Radar Detector. (Around $238.00) MSRLP.
Not 100% positive, but I was told that XP code on the paint was code to DELETE the lower charcoal rockers and lower bumper fascias on ascMcLarens.
