An '84 finallay pops up!!??

Post by jds3660 »

How many '84's were made? I recall hearing much about the mysteries that abound around the '84's....and this is the first time I recall an example of one popping up.

50 verts.

A few have surfaced here and there.

ZERO coupes have surfaced.

The '84 'vert piqued my interest given how rare, complete, and relatively inexpensive it is.....although all ASC's are rare.

I'd be interested in jumping at an ASC McLaren before values rise - while they are still reasonably priced. While I'm not interested in them for the investment potential per se, I do expect them to rise in value at some point. I don't want to end up being one of those weanies with more $$ than brains that you see bidding outrageously on cars at the auctions out west (B-J, for example??).....

My IDEAL list would include - either one or both - of the following...I can't make up my mind!!

1) A Full-Package '86 (i.e., EFI) coupe - blue with Popsicle orange striping, 5-speed, with a sunroof or T-Tops. It's a tall order, I know...were all the FP coupes 5-speeds? My memory is a blank as far as this is concerned for some reason....I must mention though, that Mustang Jim's EuroCoupe is compelling...while it's not a Full-Package car and it's an auto, it is damn clean. And the questions about the car's "uniqueness" - i.e., the airdam, etc. - attract me.

2) An '86 (i.e., EFI) 'vert 5-speed- with the Coupe's ground effect package. Another tall order.....refresh my memory - was this referred to as the Sport Decor package?

All 1984 & 1985 Coupes were 5-Speed Manual.
In 1986, 4-Speed Automatic became an available option on Full Packaged ascMcLaren Coupes. 9 were ordered & made. (Mine is 1 of them). 9 out of 115. The new-for-1986 EuroCoupes were mostly 4-Speed Automatics, allthough a handfull or so were 5-Speed Stick.

Yes, the convert with foggies and 360 degree ground effects was a car ordered with the "Sports Decor Group" :D

Wonder is the car #29 or #27 did you see in his ad his quote "Series # 29. It is # 27 of 50 in the Series 29" makes me wonder where the #'s he is getting is coming from? The photo in his link is an old one i have seen before? Wonder if this car is the real deal maybe? I do like it.

It would have to be the real deal, wouldn't it - I couldn't see someone "faking" a 'vert - the body mods required to do so would be entirely too involved. A coupe on the other hand could easily be "faked" with a standard-issue Capri. With a Coupe, I would be on guard before buying it and do my homework.

Or did you mean, whether it's a real '84 or not?

I'm told that the optional 'vert ground effects package - the same one used on the coupes as standard equipment - was also referred to as the "Sport Decor Group".
