Super Cheap NOS 85-89 Mustang Capri Starter Relays

I have several NOS starter relays. These are correct for 85-86 Capris and 85-89 Mustangs for ALL engines. (somewhere in 85 they switched over from an older style)

These will also work in just about every Ford imaginable with a 12v system (60's to whenever). Even if your relay is a different style the hookups are exactly the same.

I'm throwing them out here at I what I think is a real steal. $12 for one and $11 each if you buy 2 (or more).

These are High Quality Ford units at the price of the cheapo aftermarket ones you can get at Autozone.

I'll probably take 2 but I have to double check my car to make sure they will work. I remember having problems when I needed one before...and I know for a fact mine is different than my dads 87 so I have to check. I just don't remember which car was which. I'll check as soon as I get home.

What kind of problems? There really isn't anything that can go wrong with a relay like this. Put 12v to the small connector and it kicks the inner switch over to make the connection between the two large posts. If you got a relay not rated for the amount of power needed by the starter, then I could see an issue.

I'm going by the Motorcraft Parts manuals on this and all it says is 85-89 Mustang....all engines.

Sorry...problems as in finding the right one...I know mechanically they are all the same but I kept finding one's with the posts on the wrong side...finally found one on ebay...maybe it's me idk...lol

Well there are two styles. That could be an issue. The other style is this:

The battery cable and starter cable will mount at a different angle....but you should be able to get it to work.

no link it was like 2 years ago...mine DEFINITELY looks like the one you have but I could have sworn I was finding ones with the post on the wrong side...

I have so much sh!t going to it...it needs it to be where it is...Some day I want to do a nice buss bar setup to clean up that area...some day...ha

Mike or Mike, which would I need for my '86 Capri, bone stock, 688 miles at present, IF IF IF I ever needed one ?? (and) which one for my 1990 Mustang McLarens ?? Same, or different ? Per usual, things mechanical, I'm lost.

Sandy, I think you would need the style I have for your as the older ones were different. For 90+ I don't know.

I pulled out the picture of your engine bay and it looks like that black plastic cover by the battery would be where it is.

Hmmm it looks like what I took off (bottom pic) is the same as what you have (assuming your positive post is on the left) but the only thing I was able to find as a replacement is a bit different. (top pic I just took). Either way I think what you have (mounted with the positive post to the right) will work for me if I ever need another one...Don't you agree?

The battery posts are 100% interchangeable.

Think of a relay as a big heavy switch (which it is). If you had a big manual switch (like the kind in a frankenstein movie) between two wires, it doesn't matter which wire you hook up to which end of the switch. All the switch does is provide continuity between the wires when the switch is closed.

Take that big manual switch, safely house it in a plastic encloser with an energizer to flip it and you have a relay. To flip the switch you just put 12v on the post and it snaps the big switch inside closed so that the two posts are solidly connected. Take the 12v off and the internal switch pops open.

So looking at the relay you took off...bottom picture, it is the same as what I have except mine doesn't have the extra little post...which you obviously never used on your old one (since the post is all gunky). The second post is not needed at all so don't be worried about it.

I did the same in my car (just a bit differently). I had a starter relay that had one small post. The replacement I got had 2. I just used the one post. As long as when you put 12v to the post and the relay snaps closed, you're gtg!

I only have the style shown at the very top of the thread here. Your car being an 86 should be that style. The only difference is that the original one on your car may have the extra small post on it like Mike's had.
