I spy an ASC UPDATE

Post by tfs2121 »

who was driving the white 85 capri vert with a blue top on friday?

somone passed me in one going east bound on 13 mile between Farmington and Drake at 1:45 yesterday afternoon. i was going to bust a U turn and chase the car like i always do but i was on my way to a meeting for work. this is the closest to my house i have ever seen one. it was only 1/2 mile from my house.

oh yeah is your top broken? it was a nice day put that thing down!

so i think i found this car. i went to outback for diner tonight and in the parking lot was a 1985 vert. white with blue top. i HAD to get up and look out the window the whole meal till i spotted the owner. i ran outside and had him roll the window down. he was a very nice middle aged man. i asked if he was the original owner. he said no but he did buy the car in 1986. the car did have the coupe ground effects. holes from taillight covers but no covers. it was also missing headlight covers. i also found it odd that it had the 360 pinstripe around the center bump of the 2 grooves in the belt molding. just like the euro coupes and sandys. the CUN is 613185.

so my question is why did this 85 have the coupe parts?
also is the pinstripe stock?
it didnt have a dash number. its an 85 should it? i know the coupes didnt get one but i thought the verts did.

i dont know too much about the verts. i mostly study the coupes.

i gave him my name and phone number. i also told him about this site. he didnt know who sandy block is (i ask every person with an asc that).

i told him about the show on the 10th. he wrote all this stuff down on a note pad.

will post pics after work on wed.

Hey very cool man.

When I was down buying the paint for my wheels the guy behind the counter had to come out and look at my car. He said his neighbor at their cottage in N. Wisconsin has a coupe also. He didn't seem to know very many details since the guy doesn't drive it much.
Just thought I would share.

Yes, some 1985s did have the stripe. No, never saw nor heard of a 1985 with head or tailight covers, nor the coupe's ground effects. I am sure that the last 2 items were added AFTER 1985 !

i bet the dealer he got the car from in 1986 had some 86 verts in stock. when somone traded the car in after 1 year the dealer orderd the coupe stuff. they liked the look of the all new 86 vert with the sports package. so they add it to this 85 that they needed to move.

A little late but yes 85 Verts did have #'s but the number is on the passenger side of the car.

BTW both of my 85 Vert's had a gold stripe in the belt molding and the 5 speed has the head/tail covers and the ground effects.

Sandy may be correct. My guess is that it was done at the dealer. The paint was equally faded on my 17K mile car on the bumpers and the ground effects.

Did you ever get the number off the rear quarter emblem?

Wrong:-

White trim on windshield wipers
Chrome grille barS
Lack of headlight covers

Yes, 1985s had the passenger side plaque
just rearward of the door opening.

Guys, remember one thing. At GM, Ford, Chrysler and others, when a new model year begins, all items not called for on the new model year, go into "Service" mode (i.e. PARTS) ~ but with speciality car manufacturers, such is not USUALLY the case. ascMcLaren, Excalibur, Avanti, (all now defunct, I know) they would use up 90% of what was left over on the new model - even if the new model didn't call for it. When all but like 10% were gone, then they'd either build the product as called for - for the new model year, without that part -OR- they'd built them with the NEW replacement part.

It's just the way the small speciality manufacturers do it. It even has a name !! "Running Change"

The bodyside tape stripe was an option from ASC on the Mustangs ONLY for 1990. They had seen many 87, 88 & 89s with it, obviously put on by owners, so they decided to cash in on the opportunity. I have it on my Azura Blue car. The stripe is Silver Metallic.
For 1990 FROM ASC, they came in Silver Metallic, Black, White, Red and Gold Metallic. I have a few. Very few.

The ones on the Mercury Capri ascMcLaren 'Vert were Navy or Gold Metallic.
Any 87, 88 or 89 with the "Bumper-Body-Bumper" Stripe was dealer or owner added.
