'Ya, but try & sell it with a salvage title. Unless one can get the "SALVAGE" removed from the title, you two will be married for life. (Unless ya sell it for parts...)
What with Carfax these days, buyers out there are looking for Sandy-condition cars at wholesale minus $1,000 before they open their wallets, and EVEN then they are timid to commit to buy. I've never seen it so bad,
Guys in NYC going to Ahh, Okay, Houses of ill repute, ('Ya know what I mean...) are not THAT scared of getting VD, as buyers are today in the showroom. Used to take 40 - 60 minuters to sell a car. Now-a-days
it can take a week or two or three of "thinking about it" and so many are so timid to take the plunge. Many actually talk themselves out of it.

About selling cars...... hey, people are hestitant for lots of reasons nowadays, for starters - cars have gotten ridiculously expensive. You could buy a decked out Mercury Grand Marquis in 1986 for about $12,500...... that same car now?
Another example of buyer timidness is getting screwed by unscrupulous dealers. All the cars down in the gulf that fell victim to Katrina, were cleaned out, given new upolstery and shipped AWAY from the gulf to be sold at discounted prices but with serious rust and electrical problems. Thats just one example, there are many..... There are some giving a bad name to the rest.

Sell it to somebody in a state that just needs a bill of sale. Then use the Bill of Sale to sell it back and get another title.shelbyscarab wrote:How do you go about getting the "salvage" off the title?negusm wrote:As cars get older a salvage title doesn't mean much. Many classic cars go for big money with salvage titles.
Problem is, can this car survive long enough where "salvage" loses its relevancy?

Go to ITS titles and claim the title was lost and have them produce a new one.
Regardless of what the title says, Carfax may still come up with a Salvage mark on it.

Well, my 1985 Coupe cost $13,330 on A-Plan (employee pricing) and that's about $27,500 in 2009 dollars.
A Mustang GT today is about $27,000 on the same discount program.
My 1985 Corvette stickered at $28,321, about $57,000 in today's dollars. A much better similarly-equipped '09 Vette is about $41,900.
Some cars did stay about with inflation. Some cars actually beat inflation.
Sadly, you're right: much income did not keep pace, but that's the plan, eh?
The new America: Those who have old money and those who get government checks. That pesky old Middle Class had too much freedom--economic, political, financial, etc..

CarFax isn't too reliable. They don't subscribe to every database. They just lost a big class action suit over implying they do. Be wary of them.
Salvage title or no, a nicely restored rare car is worthwhile--especially if the idea is to enjoy the car.
Who among us would turn down a "salvage" 60s Shelby in good shape at the right price?

I would. Perhaps after 27 years in the car business, I have seen too much.
But, in honest defense, if (and IF is THE key words, here...) you buy a NEW car from a small family owned dealership (and most are fading away) you'll get an honest deal.
It's the hugh razz ma tazz "WE SELL AT INVOICE" dealers on the highways & interstates that are, well, lets see, i gotta keep it clean...
lets just say definately NOT Kosher.
Use Common sence ! If it smells spoiled....it is. Do not taste!
Sadly, people are dumb and they go to the big wizz bang highway houses and get lured in by very good salesmen.
In a slight of hand "if I could, would you" atmosphere.
Go to KBB.com price out the car you want using their invoice. Take THAT number
and add to it about $250 for Advertising which is billed to each car that KBB know nuttin' about! Then be sure you have added the Destination Charge to the total of the car AND the options. Then add $500 for profit.
Any dealer adding Prep charge is feeding you B.S. with gravy.
Car + factory options + $250 advertising + destination fee (on window of car) + $500 profit = a fair & honest deal.
Any less, you'll get a surprise at delivery !!
and you will look like that!
SHOP small store, and vist the big dealers to see colors / models on Sunday, when most are closed.
You cannot "beat" a car salesman. They are among the faster thinking on their feet, keen, perceptive salepeople around. They have to be !
We get paid $100 @ week. That's $5,200 @ yr. Can YOU live on that?
All the rest comes from commissions.
We like good quick clean deals, with little trouble. Show me a $500 profit and we have a buyer and a seller & e'one is a happy camper.

Sorry this was not my car. I saw it on craigslist, but did not go see it yet. In talking with him it is in good shape, need overdrive and top.
