Mike, not talking about this particular relay but sometimes a relay does have a polarity. Some have another internal wire connected to the positive terminal for another circuit purpose. Also I remember having read a TSB long time ago about starter relay causing problems to injection systems because of a diode in some other Ford models. But my memory could be wrong.

There are a bunch of types of relays...so my description is overly simplified when you get into the other types. I suppose there might be relays setup like you mention. A diode would be something that might help protect current from going in the opposite direction.

The relay here shouldn't matter on the pos/neg. I am pretty sure, when I replaced my relay, I held it in my hand, grounded the relay, and then touched 12v to the small post. The internal switch "jumped" (almost dropped the thing)...so there is no need for this relay to be hooked up to a power source on the big posts to work correctly.
