New owner of 87 mclaren convertible...trunk opener???

Post by porshapower »

Hello Guys :) So I have a cable sticking out between the convertible top cover and the trunk lid that you pull and the trunk opens up. Was this cable attached to a latch somewhere? I also have the button for the power trunk popper in the glove box and it makes no noise when I push it. Was the power deleted and a cable pull system installed on the mclaren? Thanks :)

There were emergency release cables for both the trunk and tonneau cover in case the battery was dead. They were located in the storage boxes in the package shelf. In my 85, the trunk is on the drivers side and the tonneau cover is on the passenger side. The cable has a loop on the end to make it easier to pull.

The cable behind the driver is for the trunk release. The cable behind the passenger is for the gas tank release. Those are the only 2 on my '86.

I would guess that a previous owner had some sort of issue with the power release button in the glove box. Possibly a short , bad relay, bad motor, etc. and decided not to fix it since they could use the release cable.
Then after time the cable broke broke, so instead of replacing it, they pulled it through the box and ran it up between the cover and trunk lid as you have it now.

A couple of years ago my release cable broke and I didn't replace it until I started having intermittent issues with the power button. I posted my process with a few helpful hints. Here is the link:

The 1986 ASC Capri Vert has three release cables,

The one behind the drivers seat opens the trunk

The one behind the pass, seat opens the tonneau cover

In the trunk under the mat is a cable with a t handle hooked on it
this opens the gas door.

Hope this Helps

Thanks to all of you guys for the help! Now I know what is going on and can try to fix this. Tried to locate a cable but seems like there are not any out there for sale any longer. Thanks for the link on the repair. This is something I definately will be doing in the near future. Thanks again. :)

Paradise Auto is an amazing resource. Lots of original replacement parts, general information and a great section for Service Manuals, that can help walk you through repairs as well as giving you clues to what some of the issues may be.
